The number of people expected to get cancer worldwide this year just increased.

According to a new reportby the World Health Organization, the global cancer burden increased to about 18 million new cases and nearly 10 million deaths in 2018. That's about four million more cases and one million more deaths than previous estimates.

Researchers say there are several reasons why, including growing and aging populations.

Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide and is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men. For women it's breast cancer, which will account for one in four of all new cancer cases diagnosed in women this year.

A top World Health Organization official says “efficient prevention and early detection policies" are urgently needed to control this devastating disease.
