The Food and Drug Administration issued a mandatory recall for all kratom products manufactured, processed or packaged by Triangle Pharmanaturals LLC after some products tested positive for salmonella.

The FDA says it took action after the company failed to comply with its request for a voluntary recall.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 27 people were hospitalized after being contaminated by salmonella linked to kratom.

Kratom is a plant native to Southeast Asia. It's often used by Americans to treat pain, anxiety, depression and symptoms of opioid withdrawal.

In November, the FDA released a public health advisory, saying kratom has similar effects to narcotics — such as abuse, addiction or death.
