Germany's top administrative court ruled Tuesday that cities and towns can ban the use of diesel-fueled vehicles — but they don't have to.
The decision was an attempt by the court to help clean up the country's air pollution, which is above the European Union's legal levels in some German towns.
Some car enthusiasts say the ban could decrease the value of their vehicles, while environmentalists say this is a step in the right direction.
The Washington Post reports there are still about 15 million diesel vehicles on German roads. Cities could start banning diesel as early as this year.
