Those Snapchat advertisements we talked about a few months back are officially on their way.
Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel, at Vanity Fair's New Establishment summit, announced the first round of advertisements will be "coming soon."
According to a writer for BuzzFeed, the ads will be rolled out as part of Snapchat's stories feature.
Snapchat Stories allow users to publish photos and videos throughout the day, creating a — you guessed it — story about your day. Friends can view your story for 24 hours before it disappears, making room for your next story. (Video via Snapchat)
It's still unclear what the ads will look like, but The Verge quotes Spiegel as saying, "We think they're pretty cool." One thing that's arguably "pretty cool" is the ads won't track users, meaning they won't be targeted advertisements.
That's unlike Facebook or Google, which track some of your online habits and serve up ads based on those habits.
Though, when you think about it, it's no surprise the company that prides itself on ephemeral messaging is making sure advertisements don't interfere with its ideals.
This is the company that turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook; it was going to have to introduce a form of monetization at some point.
Especially with a potential $10 billion valuation, Snapchat will have to prove its worth.
