Airbus May Cut 3,700 Jobs Amid Struggling A380 Project

Airbus may cut jobs in Europe as it struggles to sell its A380 commercial airliner.

Airbus announced it could cut as many as 3,700 jobs in Europe.

The airplane manufacturer blamed the reductions on the lack of demand for its A380 superjumbo jet and the A400M, one of the company's military planes.

It's another sign the A380 project isn't going well. Airbus will only deliver six of those planes in 2020 — half of what it's expected to deliver this year. The company projected to make at least 1,200 A380s in the project's first 20 years. So far, it has only delivered a little more than 200.

In fact, Airbus was reportedly close to shutting down A380 production all together in January. But Dubai-based carrier Emirates purchased at least 20 superjumbo jets, essentially keeping the program afloat. The European aerospace giant hopes the Emirates order will inspire other airlines to buy more of its double-decker planes.
