Companies are using all sorts of gimmicks these days to get you to open the junk mail they send, but the letter this California woman received may not be what they had in mind.

The Los Angeles Times reports San Francisco writer Lisa McIntire was shocked after receiving a Bank of America credit card offer addressed to "Lisa Is a Slut McIntire."

As you probably guessed, "Is a Slut" is not Lisa McIntire's legal middle name.

The letter was actually sent to Lisa's mother, who texted her after receiving the nasty message, writing: "Interesting piece of junk mail addressed to you." (Via KGO-TV)

After McIntire’s mother informed her about the letter, McIntire sent a tweet out saying: "I don't know what is going on, but having my mom receive mail addressed to 'Lisa Is A Slut McIntire' is wildly not acceptable." (Via Twitter / @LisaMcIntire)

The freelance writer then contacted Bank of America and the Golden Key International Honour Society, which partnered with the bank on the credit card offer.

McIntire says that after communicating with a Golden Key executive, it was determined that her middle name was changed sometime between 2004 and 2008. (Via KPIX)

To which McIntire responded: "So it's possible that I've been sluttin' it up in a honor society's database for almost 10 years." (Via Twitter / @LisaMcIntire)

Golden Key has admitted the error was on their end, not Bank of America's, but says they're still unsure how it happened.

The story has set the social media word ablaze, inspiring hashtags like #Slutgate. Someone has already created a Facebook fan page for McIntire. (Via Twitter, Facebook)

Golden Key issued a public apology to McIntire late Thursday; however, they messed up her name again — this time spelling "McIntire" incorrectly. (Via Twitter / @Golden_Key)
