David Nielsen joined SHNS in October 1996 as a sportswriter/editor. He has reported, edited and helped coordinate the coverage for Scripps at four Olympic Games, four NCAA Final Fours and one Wimbledon. In May 2007, he became assistant managing editor where he helped lead the Washington bureau's transition from its traditional print focus to a multimedia hub providing news over multiple platforms for Scripps newspapers, television stations and websites, as well as for media clients around the world.

He assumed his current role in April 2010. While focusing on the news, he never stops looking for sports-loving celebrities to participate in the annual Scripps Howard Celebrity Super Bowl Poll.

Before turning to journalism, David worked several years as a bank examiner and financial analyst. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Texas Christian University and a master's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. David lives in Virginia with his wife, Colleen, and their daughter, Erika.
