People who suddenly and unexpectedly find themselves in the job market understandably want to update and circulate their resumes as quickly as possible. But don't rush so fast that you make spelling or grammatical errors. Slow down, carefully consider what professional skills and achievements to highlight, and then meticulously proofread your document. Remember: It's better to submit a flawless resume tomorrow than it is to send a mistake-laden one today.
The following job seeker apparently has a relaxed attitude about editing:
RESUME: "I am seeking i meditate employment!"
Must be a yoga instructor.
This assertive candidate also should "immediately" review and revise his job-application materials:
COVER LETTER: "Sorry to be blunt, but I'm in need of a job immeddietely! Time is of the essence! We can discuss pay when you contact me."
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
This designer with experience in the nonprofit sector made an unfortunate typo:
RESUME: "Graphic designer seeking no-profit career."
Negotiation isn't his strong suit.
Effective proofreading requires you to do more than just run spell-check. The program won't catch every type of error, such as misused words that are spelled correctly. To wit:
"SKILLS: I always try to be goo at what I am doing."
He gets himself caught in a lot of sticky situations.
"STRENGTHS: Word processing, copying and filling."
She's either an administrative assistant or a pastry chef.
