Hobbies: Hair accessories for spring

This spring, hair accessories are all the rage. They are the must-have item for fashion-forward girls. Everything from flirty straw hats and dainty floral hair clips to bold headbands and narrow hippie bands are gracing the pages of fashion magazines and the racks of boutiques.
For designer goods, the price can be rather high, but if you make or embellish your own accessories you don't have to spend a fortune to create some of Hollywood's hottest looks.
Straw hats of all shapes and sizes are extremely fashionable at the moment and they help protect you from the sun. To add extra pop to a plain hat, pin a funky broach to the front, hot glue a ribbon band or hand sew a few silk flowers to the side.
To make decorative hair clips, all you need are a few supplies. Hair-clip blanks are available at most craft and fabric stores. They are very inexpensive and can be customized with anything from ribbons, buttons, rhinestones or silk flowers.
A "Plain Jane" headband from the dollar store can get a makeover with just a little paper and Mod Podge. Crafts stores have a huge selection of scrapbook papers, which are perfect for embellishing a headband.
Hollywood starlets are wearing hippie-style headbands. The narrow band stretches across your forehead, around to the back of the head and then it is tied to secure. The hippie headbands can easily be created by braiding together narrow ribbons, strips of leather, yarns or cording.
Designer looks for your hair are just a few simple crafty steps away, so get creative and make your own accessories this spring.

Supplies:

Wide Headband -- plain
Mod Podge -- Matte
Foam Paintbrush
Decorative Paper
Pencil
Scissors
Wax Paper
Rickrack trim
Hot glue
3 small silk flowers
3 medium rhinestones
Scrap of coordinating ribbon

1. Create a template of the headband by tracing it on a piece of scrap paper. Using the template as a guide, cut the template from the decorative paper.
2. Working on a piece of wax paper and using a foam paintbrush, coat the back and front side of the paper with Mod Podge. Position the paper on the headband, press out any air bubbles with your fingers, smooth your brush strokes. Allow to dry.
3. Hot glue rickrack trim to the edges of the headband. Hot glue silk flowers to the mid-top section. Hot glue a rhinestone to the center of the flowers. Hot glue a scrap of ribbon around the two ends of the headband to secure the rickrack.
