Resumania: Stick to professional accomplishments

"ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Sports."
Not exactly a slam-dunk statement.
Hiring managers are interested in professional accomplishments that show you can boost the bottom line, enhance productivity or increase efficiency. These types of quantifiable achievements are especially valuable in the current economy. But many job seekers stumble by heralding vague, irrelevant, inflated or dated points of personal pride. Consider these examples:
"ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Awarded the Lamp of Learning in high school."
Well, we are looking for bright candidates.
"ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I continually receive complaints on the high quality of work I perform."
He just doesn't know how to take a compliment.
"ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Get along with coworkers."
That's more of an expectation than an achievement.
This administrative candidate is probably popular around lunchtime:
"ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Created a pizza order system."
She promises to be available for an interview in 30 minutes or less.
These next two job seekers failed to back up their bold claims:
"ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I am the best and most awesome employee in New York City. It's true."
We'll need some proof.
"ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I have successed in all my endeavors."
Unfortunately, we're not convinced.
Finally, use your cover letter to expand upon your most applicable skills and qualifications, as well as express your enthusiasm and strong interest in the open position. But be careful not to appear pushy or presumptuous.
COVER LETTER: "Here I am! Your new employee!"
Do we have a say in this?
COVER LETTER: "I am honest, friendly and have a good sense of humor. So, c'mon, throw me a bone already!"
Beef or chicken?
