Zach Braff sees his "Scrubs" character as the antithesis of most TV leads.
"So many guys on TV are the cool stud who gets all the girls," says Braff of the nerdy J.D. "He does get some pretty ladies but he's kind of a goofy guy.
"And a lot of people can relate to that."
After eight seasons, J.D. is not about to change, even though "Scrubs" is.
The series, reportedly in its final season, is moving to ABC starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday. And with it, the network wants the hospital comedy to anchor the night.
J.D. is still getting the girls, though. Courtney Cox joins the cast for a few episodes, playing his new (and very attractive) boss.
The thought of it may be intimidating for J.D. but not for Braff.
"She's a TV comedy legend," Braff says. "She's a very, very funny woman. We didn't know who'd be playing the character for a long time.
"When we heard it was her, we were very excited. There are a lot of actors who do movies, but (if you get them) they may not make John Q. Public to tune in to 'Scrubs.'
"With Courtney, we have the best of both worlds."
Though the cast of regulars are known for picking on each other backstage, Braff says Cox was safe from harassment.
"No hazing," he says. "Big-time names are safe."
