Resume should contain most pertinent career successes

Being part of a World Series-winning team is the ultimate accomplishment for a professional baseball player. Though your biggest career successes may not draw worldwide attention, they do have a place on your resume. Note any awards or special recognition you've received from an industry organization, charitable group, trade publication or employer. Just be sure the distinctions are relevant to the job you seek. The following candidates didn't hit any home runs with these less-than-impressive accolades:"AWARDS: Received 'The Most Sophisticated Employee Award.'"The bottled water in the breakroom is now sparkling."ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Fundraised over $16."Don't spend it all in one place."ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I received approval."Often the hardest honor to earn."AWARDS: Who's who?"We have no idea.Always review your resume to make sure your writing conveys a clear meaning. The last thing you want to do is to leave prospective employers wondering what you are trying to say."STRENGTHS: I always start what I finish."A candidate who likes to approach things from different angles. Finally, a note I recently received from a diligent reader named Joseph illustrates the cultural differences that exist in today's global world. In a previous column, I had commented on a job seeker who wrote, "I have several professional and personal referees," noting that the candidate most likely meant references. Joseph correctly pointed out that referee is an acceptable synonym for reference in the United Kingdom.I don't know for sure if the candidate made a legitimate mistake, but I did read referees as a typo. It goes to show that you can never be too careful when crafting your resume and cover letter.
