ShareThisTORONTO -- Don't put "Miracle at St. Anna" in a box stamped "African-American film" or "African-American history."Actor Laz Alonso says he hates when people "try to corner you into saying, 'OK, this is an African-American story.' " After all, he told a roomful of reporters, "These men helped change the scope of history worldwide. This is world history that the Buffalo Soldiers contributed to."A former Wall Street investment banker-turned-actor who stars in Spike Lee's "Miracle at St. Anna," Alonso added, "I've lived a lot of Black History Months in my life, and I've learned a lot about slaves and a lot about the civil-rights movement."But in studying about the contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers and how they affected the outcome of the world -- yours and mine, your kids and my kids -- I realized that this story is bigger than just African-American history.""Miracle at St. Anna," based on a James McBride novel, is about the 92nd Infantry Division -- 15,000 black men known as Buffalo Soldiers -- who served in Italy during World War II.McBride had an uncle, Henry, in Brooklyn, who was a veteran. In a commemorative book about the movie, McBride describes him as a short, well-built man "who favored Rheingold beer, suspenders, a pork-pie hat and sported a gold tooth."He worked as an Oldsmobile mechanic and was a "juicer" or drinker, McBride writes. "When the thunder hit him, often when he was playing cards with his buddies in his parlor, he'd raise his glass of gut flusher in the room full of haze, smoke and playing cards and roar, 'Boy, them Eye-talians loved us! We was kings over there!' "As a boy, McBride didn't appreciate the wartime yarns, but the older McBride did, and his extensively researched book found its way to Lee."We did this for the people who aren't here. Not just the Buffalo Soldiers," the director said during the Toronto International Film Festival.He anchored a panel that included actors Alonso, Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, Omar Benson Miller, Pierfrancesco Favino and Valentina Cervi, along with novelist-screenwriter McBride and composer Terence Blanchard, who used a 97-piece orchestra to score the movie."While we were shooting this film, many times elderly Italians would come up to me and tell me they were children during the war," Lee said. "I met some that were survivors of the massacre at St. Anna," which is dramatized in the film.On Aug. 12, 1944, the Nazis killed 560 Italians, including 150 children under 14 and infants a few months old, at Sant'Anna di Stazzema. "We shot at the exact same location for two days, and everyone on the cast and crew could feel the spirits and the souls of those 560 that were slaughtered," Lee said. "You have a duty to get this right."Ealy and Luke play soldiers with opposing viewpoints about their military service that could be applied to other aspects of American life.Ealy, a breakout star from the "Barbershop" films and Showtime's "Sleeper Cell," said, "Derek's character, Sgt. Aubrey Stamps, believes that by fighting this war, we will create change, for our people and our children, for our grandchildren. ... My character, Bishop (Cummings), is diametrically opposed to that position."Sgt. Cummings insists soldiers should not fight for a country that doesn't fight for them and that doesn't respect them. "He does not believe that we belong in this war. We should not be there, we should not be fighting, it will not change anything."The characters, McBride said, "really represent the W.E.B. Du Bois-vs.-Booker T. Washington debate, which had been going on in the black community for many years. Malcolm X vs. Martin Luther King" in later times.If the soldiers were unsung in the States, they were not in Italy."Over the years, they'd go to places like Luca, Barga and Genoa and (were) given the keys to the city and so forth by the Italian people who never forgot the kindness and bravery and courage of the Buffalo Soldiers," McBride said."And it should be mentioned that the Buffalo Soldiers never forgot the courage and braveness and kindness and moral strength of the people of Italy, because the Italians suffered tremendously during the war."If "Miracle" shows that not all soldiers looked like John Wayne or Clint Eastwood, it also tackles stereotypes about Italians.Favino, who plays an Italian partisan and soon will be seen in "Angels & Demons," said Italians too often are portrayed in movies as "people playing mandolins or having sex or eating pizza." And yet they were courageous and even conflicted about their allegiance during the war.Although Lee spoke no Italian -- the word "due," meaning "two," was an all-purpose, oddly acceptable answer to most questions -- and the remarkable boy shown on the poster, newcomer Matteo Sciabordi, spoke no English, they found a way to communicate.The 6-foot-6 Miller, who portrays the gentle giant who rescues and protects the child, said, "I think that everywhere we went, we were well-received. It wasn't always stereotypical in the case of them thinking we were on a basketball team or anything to that effect."Whether with Matteo, crew members or strangers, Miller said, "Passion and focus and love really supersede any sort of confusion if you're willing to allow it to.
