There are many tactics a job hunter can use to garner attention from hiring managers, but a video resume may not yet be the best bet. In a survey by Robert Half International, only 24 percent of executives said their organizations accept video resumes. Many employers will not view video resumes because they reveal a candidate's race, age and gender - protected classes under equal opportunity employment legislation. This also underscores why you shouldn't add photos to your resume. I've come across resumes from people who've added professional headshots, pictures of their pets and even digitally enhanced self-portraits.Instead, stand out by researching prospective employers and tailoring your resume to their respective needs. And, of course, show your professionalism and attention to detail by carefully proofreading your document - unlike these job seekers:"VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES: Bro bono work."A giving sibling.COVER LETTER: "I bring a hit-the-ground-running attitude to every assignment, and impart the same tomystaff."But you forgot to hit the spacebar."STRENGTHS: I'm always tring to go above and beyond."We recommend "tring" a little harder. "JOB DUTIES: Staffing specialist. Recruit and interview hundreds of candidates, inhibiting their ability to represent our company on countless job assignments."She also has strong hindering and thwarting abilities. We sincerely hope this next applicant meant to use the word liaison:"JOB DUTIES: Serve as direct lizard between the local and national treasurers."Are you an iguana or Komodo dragon? Finally, remember that your goal is to sell yourself to hiring managers by playing up your most marketable skills, qualifications and attributes. This applicant should have strengthened his pitch:"QUALIFICATIONS: To my knowledge, I don't think I have many qualifications."Who else would know? For more Resumania, and to submit samples you've come across, visit www.resumania.com. Paying taxes unites us. It also divides us. People can pay five and even six times more in state and local taxes than other folks in similar circumstances making similar incomes.
