Obama only talks good game on gender pay equity

"Now is the time to keep the promise of equal pay for an equal day's work," Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said August 28 in his convention acceptance speech. He told the crowd in Denver: "I want my daughters to have exactly the same opportunities as your sons."Obama's campaign website is even more specific. Under the heading "Fighting for Pay Equity," the women's issues page laments that, "Despite decades of progress, women still make only 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. A recent study estimates it will take another 47 years for women to close the wage gap with men at Fortune 500 corporate offices. Barack Obama believes the government needs to take steps to better enforce the Equal Pay Act..." Obama's commitment to federally mandated pay equity stretches from the Rockies to Wall Street and beyond. And yet it seems to have eluded his United States Senate office. Compensation figures for his legislative staff reveal that Obama pays women just 83 cents for every dollar his men make.A watchdog group called LegiStorm posts online the salaries for Capitol Hill staffers. "We have no political affiliations and no political purpose except to make the workings of Congress as transparent as possible," its website explains. Parsing LegiStorm's official data, gleaned from the Secretary of the Senate, offers a fascinating glimpse at pay equity in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body. The most recent statistics are for the half-year from October 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, excluding interns and focusing on full-time personnel. For someone who worked only until, say, last February 29, extrapolating up to six months' service simplifies this analysis. Doubling these half-year figures illustrates how a year's worth of Senate employees' paychecks should look.Based on these calculations, Obama's 28 male staffers divided among themselves total payroll expenditures of $1,523,120. Thus, Obama's average male employee earned $54,397.Obama's 30 female employees split $1,354,580 among themselves, or $45,152, on average. Why this disparity? One reason may be the under-representation of women in Obama's highest-compensated ranks. Among Obama's five best-paid advisors, only one was a woman. Among his top 20, seven were women.Again, on average, Obama's female staffers earn just 83 cents for every dollar his male staffers make. This figure certainly exceeds the 77-cent threshold that Obama's campaign website condemns. However, 83 cents do not equal $1.00. In spite of this 17-cent gap between Obama's rhetoric and reality, he chose to chide GOP presidential contender John McCain on this issue.Obama responded August 31 to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's Republican vice-presidential nomination. Palin "seems like a very engaging person," Obama told voters in Toledo, Ohio. "But I've got to say, she's opposed -- like John McCain is -- to equal pay for equal work. That doesn't make much sense to me."Obama's criticism notwithstanding, McCain's payment patterns are the stuff of feminist dreams.McCain's 17 male staffers split $916,914, thus averaging $53,936. His 25 female employees divided $1,396,958 and averaged $55,878. On average, according to these data, women in John McCain's office make $1.04 for every dollar a man makes. In fact, all other things being equal, a typical female staffer could earn 21 cents more per dollar paid to her male counterpart -- while adding $10,726 to her annual income -- by leaving Barack Obama's office and going to work for John McCain. How could this be?One explanation could be that women compose a majority of McCain's highest-paid aides. Among his top-five best-compensated staffers, three are women. Of his 20-highest-salaried employees, 13 are women. The Republican presidential nominee relies on women -- much more than men -- for advice at the highest, and thus, best-paid levels. If anyone on McCain's Senate staff is unhappy, McCain's male staffers might complain that they seem to get a slightly raw deal.In short, these statistics suggest that John McCain is more than fair with his female employees, while Barack Obama -- at the expense of the women who work for him -- quietly perpetuates the very same pay-equity divide that he loudly denounces. Of all people, the Democratic standard bearer should understand that equal pay begins at home.(Deroy Murdock is a columnist with Scripps Howard News Service and a media fellow with the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University. Obama-Dumborats Got No Game

This article continues the daily examples of the Nobama Ones blatant arrogance with regard to almost all issues. The better we know Barry, the less there is to see or like. The DUmmies and Kosbrats can only respond with vulgar smears and referrences to bodily functions. What happened to all the good competition? Now all we have is punks on keyboards spewing all the filth they learned in the stalls at the metro-plex where mommy dropped them off to watch cartoons.........pitiful pukes.

This is a terrible way to show a trend

the article says itself, the discrepancies are from the positions held, you can't make comparisons like that, apples to oranges. It would be worth mentioning that McCain employs more high power women, but these averages are no way to find out about equal pay for equal WORK, when the work is NOT equal.

take a mid level man and woman from each and compare them, or better yet people in the same position of different sex, how do their wages compare?

numbers can be made to back up any "fact" you have to read into the damn study to truly appreciate it.

Pay wage

How can these politicians, keep lying to gain votes, and the next day, say something else?

Do they think we are so stupid, you know, the ones of us in the "fly over country"...that we don't hear how inconsistant they are?

I've been called a racist, a hick, a redneck and a hillbilly because I do not support Socialist Obama, all because I reside in Ky.

I'm fed up with politicians thinking they are so smart, and we are so dumb, that we need them to tell us what to say, what to think, and believe we are so stupid, we need to be lead around by the nose!

Common sense is a wonderful trait, something that seems to be missing in Washington DC.

Obama

I, too, am a southerner who seems to be disregarded by the Dems. I, too, am voting for McCain, not because I'm a bigot (I'm not) but because I don't want a socialist for president. It has nothing to do with the color of his skin, his weird name, or his loud-mouthed wife. It's just a matter of good common sense.

Obama's Pay Differential for Women on His Staff

Obama is just another lying left-wing Marxist hypocrite.

Nobaaaama

HMMMM.. Sort of reminds me of someone many years ago in Germany. At the beginning the populace rushed to hear his lies. In the end they hated him for the destruction he did and the lives he took.

Sad that Americans have lost the ability to actually think for themselves.

Read, see, compare, think and you will not likely believe this man is great. He is a Trojan Horse of deceit.

Remember what the Devil said to Faust? "In the end, you are exactly ... what you are."

I believe the phrase is

I believe the phrase is "equal pay for equal WORK" - comparing entire payrolls tells us nothing about pay disparity for doing equivalent work or having equivalent responsibilities.

"Why this disparity? One reason may be the under-representation of women in Obama's highest-compensated ranks."

That fact, alone, invalidates the entire "analysis" and all the conclusions. It might raise a completely separate issue, but this says NOTHING, whatsoever about Obama's practices regarding equal pay for equal work.

What a waste of bandwidth.

At the very least, what is

At the very least, what is says is that Obama under represents women in his staff. That is just as damning as his underpayment of them. As a woman, I like that McCain has women working for him. Obama talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. He doesn't hire women at a rate that is proper for the ratio of women to men - and he certainly scorned a woman as a possible V.P. McCain lives equality for women as evidenced both by his staff and his pick for V.P.

re: I believe the phrase is

Whether you want to invalidate the whole thing as a waste of Bandwidth, it is important to note that women are held in high regard in the McCain camp because they are seated in positions of authority.

That in itself speaks volumes.

Yes anonymous you comments

Yes anonymous you comments ARE a waste of bandwidth. Empty vessels from the left howling
useless blather.I dont care what the situation
is the left ALWAYS has an EXCUSE. And I mean
ALWAYS. Prove me wrong.

Obama is an elitist, through and through

This guy is such a loser, elitist, proud, and arrogant jerk. He's no better than Lenin who told lies to win people over and once they were won over, he destroyed them. He's vain, and sensitive to any criticism. When you have those as your qualities, you can be sure that he WILL NOT look out for the best interest of this nation if other leaders criticizes him. He will give in to them whom he looks up to. He'll render this country as his stepping stool and trash to gain favor and stature as a "citizen of the world." What a complete waste. Remember: you can always tell what sort of person he is based on the people he associates with, the things he says (i.e. Berlin), and the way he conducts his business (i.e. payroll of his employees).

FYI every politician lies and twists the truth EVERYONE!

I'm voting for Obama because frankly yes I see reality and reality has a natural liberal bias. Both Mccain and Obama have negatives but here’s a key thing. Obama will answer you if you question him. When Mccain was heckled at the RNC he said “Just ignore the noise”. When a man stood up and interrupted Obama at a smaller occasion Obama stopped talking and had a microphone handed to him. I look at our country and see a downward trend in the economy human rights and overall country quality of life. In every other country a leader is held accountable. Basically I’m glad someone who is actually willing to listen and take criticism is running for president.
Town meetings with Tony Blair were thrilling because he had to sit there and answer to everybody(reporter, Citzen or even government opponent). Meanwhile Bush only had closed meetings with his select fans(one occasion a few months ago someone finally was able to voice their concerns to him publically and they were hissed by the crowd for even suggesting that Bush has made mistakes. I see Mccain using the same cold tactics that made me dislike the bush administration I see no point in supporting a administration who’s willing to ignore opposition.
The issue brought up in this article can be answered by Obama in many ways. I personally see someone noticing that there are less women working for Obama and that’s somehow a symptom of sexism despite Obama’s voting record in the senate showing that he supports Women’s rights a lot more than Mccain.
PS. to the idiot spewing idiotic terms like “nobama” and such. Get a life.

Obama v McCain

It would be wrong for a politician giving a speech to hand a microphone to a heckler or loud protester. Obama's heckler was staged and you fell for it hook line and sinker. Face it folks, everything you see about Obama is a lie, he's just the opposite of what you think. Obama is a master manipulator, he knows of every question he will be asked because he can't talk off the top of his head, he stutters and stammers and makes stupid remarks like we have 57 states. I don't want someone so easily rattled defending me against Russia or Iran. Obama is weak.

This kind of thing is

This kind of thing is typical.

Reagan was and is disliked by feminist groups, who love leftists like Teddy Kennedy (of "waitress sandwich" fame). Yet Reagan put the first woman on the US supreme court. What could be a more powerful affirmation of women's abilities? Maybe a UN ambassadorship? He also appointed the first woman to serve as US ambassador to the United Nations. Even our first woman astronaut occurred under Reagan. ("Ride, Sally Ride")

Same thing applies to race. Colin Powell (first black secretary of state) was almost drafted as a Republican presidential pick, until he declined (as were Jeanne Kirkpatrick and Condi Rice, btw) He served as National Security Advisor and Sec. State, as did Condi. Clarence Thomas, Alberto Gonzales (first Hispanic Atty. General), etc.

I've always thought the first black president and the first woman president would be Republican, because Republicans promote for merit (a true expression of respect) rather than affirmative action (a condescending lack of respect.

Blacks have forgotten that

Blacks have forgotten that is was Republicans that Freed them out of Bondage, Passed the Civil Rights-Voter Rights Appenments. That is was the Democrates that passed Jim Crowe were fouded by Confederate Officers and created the victim mentality they believe.

Obama v McCain

I'm not surprised that Obama pays his female staffers less than the male staffers, he's a typical democrat Elitist. I basically disagree with the Equal pay for an equal days work because it doesn't compare the same jobs, it compares truck drivers to cashiers. More women are cashiers and they don't deserve what truck drivers make. Any idiot can be a cashier but it takes skill and hard work to be a truck driver. Obama on the other hand should be paying his staffers the same because they all do the same job. Obama is a liar through and through.

McCain on the other hand pays his staffers according to skill and tenure what takes sex out of the equation, which is how it should be.

the article says itself, the

the article says itself, the discrepancies are from the positions held, you can't make comparisons like that, apples to oranges. It would be worth mentioning that McCain employs more high power women, but these averages are no way to find out about equal pay for equal WORK, when the work is NOT equal.

Being truly blind to sex and not being sexist means hiring the best PERSON for a job. Is it obamas fault that the people he saw best fit and chose to help him win the presidency are men? sounds like you are all mostly sexist if it matters at all what the hiring %'s are.

re:drmoon

Really? The desire of equal pay for equal work means all cashiers will make the same, male or female, when hired and get the same raises as they climb the ladder.
The same is true for truck drivers. All of them at any one company would be hired and promoted at the same pay levels as the men they work with. I don't know why you think it would turn all jobs into being payed equally.

This article says that both McCain and Obama pay their upper level staffers, the "truck drivers" with tenure of their campaigns more, McCain just hired more women. I don't understand how in your view everyone working for Obama does the same job but McCain somehow runs a different sort of campaign.

Obama and wage

Just another example of a politician demanding from others what he will not do for himself.

Sadly this in just another example of the empty suit that passes for the Sen. in this contest.

A man that speaks differently to the elite of San Francisco, when he thinks nobody is listening, and
expects those that he discredits and slurs, to look to him for change. Well Castro was the change for
Cuba, wonder if those people, looking back, are happy with that change. But we know that, because
we see the people leaving in makeshift boats, and sacrificing all to come to our shores.

But when one compares Sen. Obama, with Gov. Palin, I trust that the Governor is the same whether she is speaking
to the elite, or the common folks, and I bet that she makes sure that pay is equal for equal work, rather than
the economics of what Obama says, and what he does.

Obama?

Obama is too weak, to be good president for US.

Everything he says is a lie

to Hell with Obama

Obama and 57 states

I'm sick and tired of all of you jumping on Obama about this 57 states in our country thing. If any of you had any sense at all, you would realize he was referring to the 57 states of the Islamic confederation. Sheeeesch. Can't you get it right???

Obama

I probably wouldn't want a socialist in office either. Taking from the rich and giving to the poor, screw them! I prefer a Republican/Fascist like John McCain. With him, I know exactly what type of manipulations and exploitation to expect. Give me a Republican/Fascist any day over a Socialist.

Hello -- it's equal pay for EQUAL WORK

Yet another example of how sadly lacking math skills are in this country. The averages in this article are meaningless and miss the point. All us women are looking for is to be paid the same as a man who's doing the EXACT SAME WORK. So if this article is amended to compare only the salaries of male and female top-level aides, or just male and female low-level aides, then it will be worth reading and discussing.

Bogus Data

I've looked at the "data" that this article refers to, and it doesn't add up.

http://www.legistorm.com/member/76/Sen_Barack_Obama.html

First of all, the totals given in this article add up to $2,877,700.
This is supposed to be double the expenditures of all staff.
If this were correct, which it is not, that would mean that the half year expenditures should be $1,438,850. The actual half year expenditures which are on this website are $1,287,614.31 (excluding the two male interns)

There is an extra $151,235.69 that isn't accounted for.

Second, they are using an average instead of a median. When you have skewed data like this you should use the median. Since the totals are bogus in the first place, this average is bogus and we'll have to calculate the "ACTUAL" numbers. Also, since this way of calculating is bogus and the only disclaimer this article gives is:

"For someone who worked only until, say, last February 29, extrapolating up to six months' service simplifies this analysis."

And the actual disclaimer on the website is:

"Congressional staff salaries shown are the amount paid in the period shown. They are not annual salaries. Because bonuses may be included here and other payments may not be (most notably with aides working for multiple offices or for a political campaign committee), please use caution in extrapolating annual salaries from the figures shown here.

We have taken great care to have this website reflect the official record, but we have discovered a handful of errors both in the official record and our own transcription. If you believe our information is in error, please let us know so we can fix it as soon as possible. We take accuracy very seriously. "

The logic behind these "statistics" are merely political, false, misleading, and outright bad. This is stuff that McCain is "approving"? http://www.johnmccain.com/involving/petition3.aspx?guid=855a55ae-6e50-4877-98e6-7e35761c1f26&s=google&t=equalpay&r=obama

Sorry, but fact checking missed something here.

Anyway, on to the actual data.
I've been trying to figure out this error they've made while typing this and I found where they calculated this data and found where that extra money that doesn't exist came from.

http://www.di2.nu/files/SENATESALARIES.xls

They actually didn't double all the salaries. They are making it a 182 days worked calculation on data that is not 182 days worked based. It includes bonuses and may not include other things which might be relevant. Sorry, but this "statistic" is total garbage. I'll try to come up with an accurate number for people to actually look at instead of this misleading junk.

Politics

Politicians are always extremely lying people, whose words would be different every day, depending on their own interests. I stopped considering them as personalities.

Do the real analysis

In fact, McCain pays his female employees more than 50% more than his mail employees ($1,396,958 to $916,914) while Obama pays his female employees only 89% of what the men make ($1,354,580 to $1,523,120).

Oh, wait a second. You mean those statistics are completely bogus!? Darn I knew I should have studied harder in college.

Come on, Deroy. Do the real analysis: compare pay for the same job to the same job. Let the facts stand for themselves.

What happens if you look at

What happens if you look at the pay for only the 20 highest paid?
