Did you eat the Peking Duck?

When we return home next week, somebody is bound to ask if we ate Peking Duck.

Now we can yes, thanks to the Quanjude Yayuncun Roast Duck Restaurant.

We didn’t know it at the time, but it turns out that the restaurant is part of a Chinese chain of duck restaurants that was founded in 1864.

We went for lunch and were the only Westerners in the spacious place.

That attracted some attention, as three giggling Chinese girls came over and asked our waitress to ask us if we were enjoying ourselves in China.

After finding a waitress who could speak English, we ordered a duck and they carved it beside our table. I’m not sure why the carver was wearing a mask, but since he was carrying a large blade, I didn’t ask.

They also brought us some thin “pancakes” (like a crepe) and taught us how to dip the duck in a barbecue-type sauce, spread the sauce over the pancake, add some sliced onions, then fold the duck, sauce and onions inside the pancake.

If not for the chopsticks, it almost felt like we were making fajitas.
