LSU better not overlook Appalachian State

After some exhaustive research (well, not necessarily exhaustive, but I did look pretty hard) I've determined that history will be made Aug. 30 in Baton Rouge.

When Appalachian State takes the field against LSU, it will mark the first time in history a defending Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1-A) national champ has opened the season against the defending Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division 1-AA) champ.

It's certainly not the national game of the day (the talking heads ESPN, when not wasting air time determining which teams have the best helmets, give that honor to the Clemson-Alabama matchup in Atlanta), but it does have a certain amount of sex appeal.

Can App State do it again? Can the FCS dynasty blur the competition line between big schools and small schools one more time?

After all, the Mountaineers are loaded and have arguably the best college quarterback at any level in Armanti Edwards. The Tigers, on the other hand, have some holes to fill - and all-world signal caller Ryan Perrilloux is now taking snaps at Jacksonville State University.

Here are the facts:

Last season the two divisions met on the gridiron 77 times, with FCS teams taking nine victories.

App State has recorded seven victories against FBS programs since the upper division of college football was split in 1982. Last year, of course, was the biggest when the Mountaineers topped Michigan in Ann Arbor. Prior to that was a win over Wake Forest in 2001.

And Appalachian State and LSU have some history. The teams last met in 2005, with the Bayou Bengals taking a 24-0 victory. LSU led just 14-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

Take away the stunner in the Big House, and folks outside Boone and Baton Rouge aren't even talking about this game.

Personally I don't expect another Miracle on Grass. While I've already penciled the Mountaineers in as four-peat FCS champions and don't even think LSU will win the SEC West, I just can't wrap my brain around an F5 level upset on Aug. 30.

But the fact that it's even being discussed speaks to the spotlight App State has helped shine on its division.

The only negative to come from the Mountaineers' 34-32 victory over the Wolverines is that elite teams in the FCS can no longer fly under the radar.

When the ball is kicked off at 5 p.m. in the other "Death Valley," rest assured the white-clad Tigers won't be daydreaming about future SEC games.

Instead, Les Miles and company will try to make a statement - one that says even the best of the FCS is no match for an SEC team.

Fortunately for Appalachian State players, they really don't care what other people think or say.

They've heard it all before.

LSU

I was half asleep when I happened across this article. Let me start by saying this is a tune up game for the Tigers. They will be ready to play. And it will take weeks for Appalachian State to recover. LSU is not Michigan. And I mean that in a good way. Michigan opened poorly, and went on to have some issues, to say the least, the rest of the season. Keep in mind guy that just bacause we loose one player. One very good player who did put in work last year, and at moments during the season he may be missed. Our main game last year was to beat the hell out of the Defensive as well as the Offensive line For four quarters. On Offense we have the best core of running Backs in the country. They are still in purple and gold. Wide Reciever, were good. Linemen on both side of the ball, were good. And yes at Quarterback we will still be ok. I'll stack our secondary against anybody's and still come out on top.At this point J. Lee or A. Hatch can start and we still have options. We don't rebuild, we reload. When any team can stop our running game then we will see how our QB situation unfolds. What you should be talking about is how USC is the most overated school in the country year after year. This year being no exception. Number 2 in the country? Please. This is with the same Quarterback that couldn't beat underdog Stanford last year. Though I must say that was nice for me because my friends a.k.a. USC fans paid my house and car payment for two months after that loss. LSU will win the West, no doubt about it. Georgia will win the East. This will be the best game of the year. One of them(LSU) will go on to play Ohio State in the BCS Bowl, proving to the country that the SEC is the most powerful division in College Football. Ohio State will be handed their butts wondering what happened. Again. Speed kills fellas. and so does the SEC. Look for me during the season at the USC / Ohio State game. I'll be the only guy at the Coliseum wearing Tiger colors while chearing for O.S. Number 2 my big Louisiana butt.

Don't discount App... People

Don't discount App... People seem to never give ASU credit for more than a minute. After three national championships, you'd think we'd garner a little more respect from people at all levels. Our team isn't that much different from last year, unlike LSU. If we were to beat LSU, I'm sure this will be the excuse.

Bottomline, men are men. Wearing a different set of colors and having a larger student body doesn't mean you train harder, play harder, or want it any less. ASU will come out strong with bold leaders who aren't afraid. I think this is where many smaller schools fail. They take the field with a major psychological; beaten before the game even starts. ASU is a rarity. They not only believe they can win, they know they can win.

No doubt this will be a very hard fought game and LSU does have certain advantages, but let's give App some credit. Go Mountaineers!

LSU vs. App. St.

Ok, for the record, I did not intend to discredit App. St. They are certainly a capable team, and very talented. But lets be honest w/ each other and do our homework. The chances of A.St. beating LSU are slim to none. I am sure they will go on to dominate their devision and most likely win it in shining and dominating fashion. But we are talking about a team that is one of, if not the best team in the SEC. The same Conference that many think is the # 1 Conference in the nation. As I said in my last posting, speed is an element that will seperate a good team from the rest. Ask Hawaii what happend to them in the Sugar Bowl against Georgia. Colt Brennan said he had never seen a team that fast. Georgia is arguably the second fastes team in the best Conference in the country. In case you havent figured it out yet LSU wi the fastest. Combine speed with talent, motivation, determination and skill and you have a team that will not and cannot loose. I do believe that you guys have a better chance of playing and beating USC though. Several teams will get deep into that buttox this year. They are so overated. At any rate, good luck this year and I wish your team the best. After the first game of course.

UNLIKE MICHIGAN LSU HAS BEEN

UNLIKE MICHIGAN LSU HAS BEEN FOREWARNED AND THEY ARE STILL CHOOSING TO BRANDISH ARROGANT STUPIDITY. APP ST. HAS PROVEN THEMSELVES TO BE A WELL-COACHED, DISCIPLINED TEAM THAT PLAYS TRULLY AS A TEAM WITH ALL PULLING THEIR WEIGHT AND NO ONE SEEMING TO THINK "HIS BROTHER'S TOO HEAVY TO CARRY"...

I PREDICT A REALLY CLOSE GAME WITH A GREAT POSSIBLIITY OF A MOUNTAINEER VICTORY.

It's Hard to be Humble

Arrogant? Let's not confuse arrogance with Swagger my man. We are the defending Champions after all. How many ways can I say that you (App. State) have a very good football team. I stated for the record that I believe you guys will go on to win your division, and will continue to upset top schools. But in about two weeks you guys will start the season with a loss. I too think the game will be close, until the half. In true LSU fashion the second half will be like a Pimp looking for his money. A whole lot of slappin' will be going on. your team will have red cheeks for a while, but keep in stride. Learn from this valuable lesson.Your upset won't happen thjs week Grasshopper. But definately a win the following week. Geaux Tigers.

I just want to say that app

I just want to say that app has a very good chance. Everyone keeps saying that the speed and athleticism of LSU will lead to a blowout. Let me remind you of Apps speed that was able to beat michigan. Sure you'll say Michigan was built around size and power not speed, but didn't they beat Florida, one of the "fast" SEC teams last season?

Last season Tim Washington DE transferred from LSU to ASU and said that the offseason workout program that he participated in at app was ten times harder than anything he ever did at LSU. The reason we have such a good chance to win is that we want this more than LSU does. Ever since we heard this game was going to start our season that's all we've been concentrating on. Hopefully for you fans of LSU your football team isn't looking at this game with the attitude that you are.

And for us to lose our secondary from last year I'm not too worried. Before we played Michigan we had lost 3 of our starting defensive lineman and the one returner was a true freshman.

I know that our chance to win is not huge, but we have experience against "top" 1-a teams, we have the speed, athletecism, and determination to hang with any team in the country, and i expect this to be a close very exciting football game.

And thankfully, even if we lose, our season won't be over, because unlike the idiotic bowl system that rewards teams that the media likes, we have a playoff system. This means that we determine a real chamipion on the field, not in the polls.

"Arrogant? Let's not confuse

"Arrogant? Let's not confuse arrogance with Swagger my man. We are the defending Champions after all." Um, SO ARE WE. Three-time defending national champions, FYI. Hence the historic significance of this game: TWO defending national champions playing one another, for the first time. Realistically, do I expect ASU to win? No. If LSU has any sense at all they noticed the media firestorm following last year's upset of Michigan, and they'd have to be really stupid to blithely expect ASU to be a "cupcake team." And as a grad student in higher education, I'm really hoping that your administration isn't that dumb, or I've picked the wrong career path.

However, seems that (so far) the reports are that LSU is considering this an easy win. That bodes well... for us. If they go onto that field unprepared, expecting it to be a blow out, then odds are in ASU's favor. I've been on this campus all year, and people have been talking about the LSU game from the very moment that it was announced. Our players and coaches have been focusing on this game for months. We have a strong, quick team, and there is a possibility that ASU could do it again. I'll be surprised, but I was shocked at last year's opening game when Corey Lynch blocked the field goal. And I'd truly love to be shocked again.

Well you are right about one

Well you are right about one thing, App does have a chance, but not a very good one. I am glad that this game will really do wonders for your athletic depts. budget. It is good that you guys will most likely open next season against the BCS Bowl Champion, again. No doubt you will open next season just like this one. I can make this determination because after the LSU game you guys dont play anybody. I will say congratulations to you now for winning another championship. Your team is a Giant in your division. But sadley SEC or PAC-10 ready your team is not. Listen guy, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Teams in your division are looking to you for this. But if App. St. wants to be considered a true contender with the likes of LSU, Georgia, USC and other top schools, you cant play the like of Citadel, Samford, Jacksonville and Furman to get there. It's not realistic. This game has all the fanfare of the Ohio St. game last season for me. By the way what would you expect a disgruntled Football player like Tim Washington to say about his former team? Using the word of someone who couldn't cut it in the SEC is not realistic at all. I dont even remember the guy. By the way you dont want this game more than LSU does, it's just that we have more to loose than your team does. That being the case you have to come out with great intensity and look for anything you can to win this game. Take it for what it is, a tune up game for us and a money maker for you. See ya' next week Playa'.

Yes you are the defending

Yes you are the defending National Champion. 3 times as you you say. But the High School teams here in California could beat the teams you guys play. Samford? Citadel? Jacksonville? James Madison? Really. Are you kidding me. Your team is a Force, no let me rephrase that, "The force" in your conference. You are doing what you are supposed to do against lesser opponents week after week. There is no historical significance in this game. This is an opportunity for your program to take in some much needed Capital. Of course your Players and Coaches have been looking forward to this game. This is your toughest game of the year. Our toughest game is not until 10/25 when we play Georgia. The App. game is a game to us. Not a lesser opponent, but a game. We will come out and play you as if we were playing in a Bowl game. Don't listen to what the Sports Casters on your local news are saying about us looking past you. We will give you your first, and probably the only loss of the season. You will learn from this game and it will be a valuable tool your Coaches will use the rest of the season. Sorry guy, lightening won't strike here.

Really, Just what I thought

We really do have you right where we want you. You will be ready, not surprised, playing at home, favored by about 30 point. Bigger, faster, richer, how can LSU lose. It will happen. Appalachian will catch everything the big teams can ditch out, the good thing is ASU will be ready. We are more than willing to defeat teams if they give us a chance. Thanks LSU for allowing us to make an examble of you. This time there should be no excuses but there will be excuses.
LSU will turn the ball over so much, this by itself will create a whole so big that LSU will not have a big enough shovel to dig out. Not to mention LSU loses last year came at the hands of teams that run the spread offense. By the way, App State was awarded The Best Spread Offense of 2007 award.

No You Didn't

Now that I am no longer laughing, I'll say this. YOU ARE NUTS. Man if you think for a minute that we wont play with s much intensity against App. as we would if we were playing a team in our Conferance. The real challenge for your team will be stopping the run game. Imagine a pair of fresh legs just about every time they run the ball. Every Running Back they put in seems faster that the next. And then there is T. Holliday, fastest kid in College Football. The run game is what will seperate us in the third quarter. And by the way you can keep the shovel, we wont need it.

For the App fans

For App fans. If you read the App fan's post here and on other forums, such as espn, you will see that App fan's recognize the fact that yall are underdogs and have the ability to pull an upset. With that being said we are in-agreeance that App St is INFERIOR!. All the facts are their, LSU has more well EVERYTHING! Yes the un-thinkable could happen, but the chances are slim.

app st.

Finally. A Tiger fan other than myself who can shine more light on this subject. Telling these guys that they have a good football team ,(in their own div.) was not good enough. Geaux Tigers.

All you LSU fans have bad

All you LSU fans have bad grammar.

We also have quite a few

We also have quite a few Nashunal Championships.

:)P

This Saturday

I graduated ASU in 2003 and I'm just stoked we get to play LSU on national television this Saturday. I consider us not losing by more than 2 TD's a good game. If it's closer, that will be awesome cause I was just as surprised as everyone else was last year in the Michigan game. Albeit, if we get blown out, I don't think anyone will be surprised. But just getting to play in this game against the best SEC team, on national tv, is gonna be awesome. Win or lose, I'm stoked.
