Don't get Big & Rich front man John Rich started on the subject of "American Idol." He might blow a fuse. The singer, who is a judge on "Nashville Star" this season as it moves from the USA Network to NBC, isn't much of a fan of "Idol." He lets you know it soon enough."'American Idol' infuriates me as an artist," he says. "I can't stand watching it. I wouldn't want to be on that show now if you gave me a $100 bill."Rich says the show appears scripted and contestants aren't treated with respect by the judges. On the similarly formatted "Star," which airs at 10 p.m. EDT Mondays, Rich says the game will be free of all that. For one, the judges -- two singers (Rich and Jewel) and one songwriter (Jeff Steele) -- will pay attention to what's happening onstage, he says."When you can't make a cognizant comment about someone's performance and you're commenting on something that happened the day before, why don't you just walk up onstage and slap them right across the face while you're at it?" Rich says, referencing an "Idol" gaffe last season when judge Paula Abdul criticized a song a contestant hadn't performed yet."As an artist, I would just flip them the bird and walk off the stage and go, 'Thank you very much. I'm going back to Topeka and work on it on my own.' "The judges will also work as mentors to each of the contestants, giving them the benefit of their years of experience.Rich can't deny "Idol" helped bring an audience to "Star." With the success of "Idol," talent competition shows such as "Star" have found popularity. For four seasons now, it's been one of USA Network's highest rated shows. NBC, a sister company to USA, snatched up "Star," hoping for an even larger audience."Star" has a star-making history, though not quite on par with Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood, who came off "Idol." "Star" has discovered Buddy Jewel and Miranda Lambert, both of which had huge debut CDs.Adding to the star power is Billy Ray Cyrus, the new host.Like most of these kinds of competitions, America will have the power to vote for favorites.Rich has another stake in the success of the show, airing live. He'll be producing the winner. (Rich is also producing a single for Julio Iglesias Jr., who won the CMT music competition "Gone Country" this year.)Why has it taken network TV this long to do a country-music competition?"Network TV lives in their only little world. And I think country music had been typecast and stereotyped as country-and-Western music," Rich says."Every time I hear somebody say that, I want to go slam my head into a brick wall. It hasn't been country-and-Western music since Bob Wills stopped making records in the 1940s and '50s. It's country music. It's music for the country."(E-mail Terry Morrow of The Knoxville News-Sentinel in Tennessee at morrow2(at)knews.com.)

AMEN BROTHA ! ! !
AMEN BROTHA ! ! !
Nashville Star vs American Idol
Darn right, John...keep up the good work. If I catch you acting all "Cowel or Abdul" on this show, I'll start a personal vendetta against you in your sweet hometown. (yes, my girls go to your old highschool)...Anyway, keep the comments honest and constructive so the contestants can learn from them. And don't ever laugh at them, please. One question, though...how did that pageant girl with the obnoxious over the top personality stay and that genuinely good singer (who picked a bad song) have to go home? Boo Hoo
NS vs AI
I enjoy Nashville Star's format - it moves quicker than
AI without as much of the "time filler" no nonsense stuff.
However, American Idol is a phenomenon that without it, there would be no Nashville Star. Even though I agree
with John's comments about the judging, I don't think he
is being fair to the AI contestants. They deserve more
respect for their courage to go through the AI process with hopes of realizing their dreams. It's really about
the contestants and the fact that AI provides life-changing opportunities for them.
The judges could go away and it really wouldn't matter.
I applaud AI for giving so many aspiring entertainers the stage as a springboard for many successful careers.

American Idol Songwriting contest
An open letter to John Rich
Hey John
I hope you read this.
2008 American Idol Songwriting Contest
The following is a quote from USAToday.com
"The song was among "tens of thousands" submitted and combed through by 19 Entertainment's more than 60 Artists & Repertoire staffers, who winnowed the list to a manageable pile before Idol creator Simon Fuller and his team pruned to 20 semifinalists, says Jeff King, 19's U.S. head of digital entertainment." End quote.
So if 60 different people were choosing ...then how did we end up with so many people with ties to A.I.?
1. 2008 American Idol Songwriting Top 20 Finalist (Andy Zulla) is an engineer on Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Diana DeGarmo CD's.
2. 2008 American Idol Songwriting Top 20 Finalist (Wendy Wagner) is a backup singer on the new Clay Aiken CD.

What Are The Odds?
In 2008's American Idol songwriting contest
according to USAToday.com "tens of thousands" of songs were submitted
http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2008-05-20-idol-songwriter_N.htm
If this years contest and last years contest were legit that
means that all of the songs entered were listened to
and judged by the lyric and music only.
This years songwriting winner according to USAToday.com
was Regie Hamm for the song "Time Of My LIfe"
http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2008-05-20-idol-songwriter_N.htm
Now in a completely different nationwide contest
The 2007 American Idol songwriting contest
which according to USAToday.com had 25,000 submissions.
http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2007-05-22-idol-songwriters_N.htm

And last but not least,
Ryan Seacrest announced on American Idol’s finale show 2007
that over a 100,000 people tried out for season six in the singing competition.
The third place finalist for season six was Melinda Doolittle.
2008-A.I. songwriting contest winner-Regie Hamm
2007-A.I. songwriting contest winner-Scott Krippayne
2007-A.I. singing third place finalist--Melinda Doolittle

False Advertising Or Bald Face Lie? You Decide
I'm posting this June 14, 2008, 24 days after the American Idol Grand Finale.
I watched American Idol both nights of the grand finale waiting for the announcement of the winners name of the 2008 American Idol Songwriting Competition....and I'm still waiting.
The following quote is from the only link American Idol.com has concerning the songwriting contest. (It's under the Show Guide Link....American Idol Songwriter)
(UPDATE!...The American Idol Songwriter link has been deleted.)
"The Nation Has Decided"
"Who Has Won? Tune in to the American Idol Finale on May 20th and 21st 2008 to find out." End quote.
Like I said....I watched. And here's the only thing said about the winner.
Ryan Seacrest......"Ladies and gentlemen singing the winning song of this years competition..The Time Of My Life..this..is..your American Idol David Cook, Goodnight. End quote.
24 days later American Idol has yet to name the winner. It's not in the American Idol news section, not on the American Idol homepage..............Nothing.
Last year the winner's were introduced on camera by Ryan Seacrest. This year nada.
The following is from the Myspace blog page of the winner of the 2008 American Idol Songwriting Competition....... Mr. Regie Hamm..........and he does not seem happy.
"AMERICAN IDOL, MAGIC RAINBOWS ...AND DOTTIE"
"The guy in the feather suit who wrote the song for Simon had his own photo stand where you could have your picture taken with him. Hmmmm, maybe next time I'll write a song so campy it simply must be performed in front of fifty million people with the USC marching band. At least then I might have my name mentioned or my face shown ...but I digress." End quote.
American Idol made a lot of money off this contest and the ONLY thing we got in return was a thanks for the $10.00 email.
