Sherri Shepherd co-hosts 'Daytime Emmys' ... Other shows

Yes, Sherri Shepherd knows the world is round.

Unfortunately, she said she wasn't so sure of its shape when asked about it a year ago on "The View." And her confusion on the subject brought her the kind of attention -- and public humiliation -- she didn't want the second day on the job.

"If I could take it back, I would," says Shepherd, whose career is none the worse for the wear. In fact, she and Cameron Mathison are hosting the 2008 "Daytime Emmys" (9 p.m. EDT Friday, ABC).

So why did she say she wasn't sure about the shape of our planet? She blames a bounced check for that. While "The View" discussion was going on around her, she was preoccupied about how the whole check snafu happened.

"I thought I had put money in the bank, and I didn't," she says. "I was trying to figure out how it happened.

"All I heard (from her 'View' co-hosts) was 'round or flat?' and I said, 'I don't know!' From there, I was the second-most Googled person in the country."

Despite the misstep, Shepherd's career is in fine shape. Besides her daily co-hosting of "The View," she's also a semi-regular on NBC's "30 Rock," playing Tracy Morgan's sassy wife.

A longtime ABC-soap-opera fan, Shepherd says she's been watching "All My Children" and "General Hospital" since she was 4 years old. "My grandma used to watch two shows at the same time," Shepherd recalls. "She had one TV on top of the other."

CBS has the most nominations; Shepherd's "The View" has nearly a dozen nods, including best talk show. Shepherd is nominated with her fellow co-hosts in the Talk Show Host category.

As host of the Emmys, Shepherd's "floored" by the idea of rubbing elbows with Susan Lucci and Tony Geary.

"I've seen them in bed with everybody and all lose their memories at some point," she says with a laugh.

And when she meets Lucci, her favorite femme fatale from "All My Children"?

"I want to ask Susan Lucci when I see her, 'How come (your character) keeps going to jail?' " deadpans Shepherd about Lucci's oft-jailed Erica Kane.

"You know what? Three strikes. She ought to stay in jail."
