Use objective statements to tailor your resumes

If you're venturing into the "real world" of work for the first time, you're probably considering a variety of potential career paths. An English major, for instance, might be interested in jobs in journalism or communications. But the resume he or she submits for a reporting job with a newspaper should be different than the one for a proofreading position at an advertising agency. Though optional, including an objective statement is an excellent way to tailor your resume to the specific type of role you want. Here's an example of an effective and targeted objective statement:"OBJECTIVE: To secure a rewarding entry-level help desk position where I can leverage my extensive knowledge of computer hardware and software and experience in a technical support role for my university's computer lab."The following objective statements, however, did more harm than good:"OBJECTIVE: To work in a company where I can grow up."Are you seeking a boss or a babysitter?"OBJECTIVE: A job."Any one will do."OBJECTIVE: My primary mission is to one day wear many different hats."All at once?"OBJECTIVE: To obtain a position that will allow me to utilize my strengths and reinforce my weaknesses."Are you sure that's a good idea?"OBJECTIVE: I possess clerical skills."Did you misfile your objective statement? Finally, when in doubt, play it safe. Remember that trying to be overly clever or casual can come across as naive and unprofessional. "OBJECTIVE: To score a wicked cool job making ridiculous amounts of money doing what I love to do: playing online Sudoku."For more Resumania, and to submit samples you've come across, visit www.resumania.com.
