Alex Marvez's weekly look at professional wrestling

The main event between Randy Orton and Paul "Triple H" Levesque on Sunday's Judgment Day pay-per-view show should come off without a hitch.Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling's most recent headline offering.Kurt Angle couldn't perform on last Sunday's Sacrifice show after suffering yet another neck injury during a recent match in South Korea. Frankie "Kaz" Kazarian took Angle's spot in a three-way bout also featuring "Samoa" Joe Seannoa and Scott Steiner (Joe won by pinning Steiner after a muscle buster). The fact Angle, 39, had never previously missed an advertised TNA pay-per-view appearance is remarkable considering his lengthy medical history. It also doesn't appear Angle will be sidelined for long. Angle already was participating in storylines involving his real-life wife Karen on this week's television tapings for TNA Impact (9 p.m. Eastern, Thursdays, Spike TV).TNA could have used its web site and/or a crawl on last Thursday's Impact show to broach the possibility that Angle might not be able to grapple. But in its defense, TNA management may have hoped Angle would still wrestle because of his reputation for performing even when not close to 100 percent healthy. TNA also risked losing a slew of $29.99 pay-per-view orders if fans knew there was a chance Angle would be out.TNA's bigger mistake was not finding a better substitute for a star the caliber of Angle. Like when Eric Young filled in after Scott Hall's no-show at last December's Turning Point pay-per-view show, Kazarian isn't considered a main event-level talent. In case Angle couldn't wrestle, TNA had ample time to book a "surprise" big-name independent talent like Sid Vicious or Terry "Sabu" Brunk for one night only even if that required some re-writing of storylines.Another option was Jeff Jarrett, who could soon be mounting a comeback after working the past year as a TNA executive. TNA, though, may have wanted to save Jarrett for a bigger, more well-planned return.COMEBACKS: Vicious (real name Sid Eudy) and Jim "The Warrior" Hellwig -- both of whom were WWE headliners at this time 16 years ago -- have resumed their grappling careers. Vicious, who suffered a severe leg injury in 2001, will headline a National Wrestling Alliance 60-year anniversary card June 7 in Atlanta.Warrior, 48, resurfaced last month after almost a 10-year absence when confronting former WWE performer Orlando Jordan on a Nu-Evolution Wrestling show in Spain. Warrior, who became a neo-conservative political speaker after leaving grappling, is slated for a June 25 bout overseas against Jordan.Despite his well-publicized problems with WWE owner Vince McMahon, there already is speculation that Warrior may appear on next year's Wrestlemania 25 show in Houston.IN TROUBLE: Three WWE performers are embroiled in out-of-the-ring controversy.Michael Hayes, the former "Freebird" turned prominent WWE scriptwriter, was suspended for 60 days after reportedly directing a racial slur toward African-American grappler Mark Henry. Hayes (Michael Seitz) is expected to rejoin the writing crew once the suspension ends.Santino Morella (Anthony Carelli) was arrested on a DUI charge earlier this month in Tampa. WWE has not suspended Morella, who is one of WWE's most amusing characters. Rolling Stone magazine also linked WWE diva Ashley Massaro to a high-priced escort ring that was being investigated by the FBI. Massaro claimed the allegations were "false, false, false" on her myspace page, but Rolling Stone is standing by its story about the former Playboy model.Another WWE female star -- Torrie Wilson -- was recently granted her release. Wilson has suffered what is believed a career-ending back injury.(Alex Marvez writes a syndicated pro wrestling column for Scripps-Howard News Service. Contact him at alex1marv@aol.com.)
