Talking with Lucy Griffiths of BBC America's 'Robin Hood'
Submitted by SHNS on Thu, 05/15/2008 - 15:12.
Like the Lady Marian she plays, actress Lucy Griffiths enjoys being in the background.
"The celebrity thing is a choice you make," says Griffiths, who co-stars in "Robin Hood" (9 p.m. EDT Saturdays, BBC America). "To a certain extent, it's good to get your face out there because it does help you get roles ... but the other side is too much self-publicizing, which can work against you in another way."
When an actress is known more for being famous than the roles she plays, she can find herself without much of a career, Griffiths says.
Griffiths was an unknown actress when she landed the role of the swashbuckling Marian in the popular British series. At age 18, she auditioned for the part. After earning it, her face turned up each week in millions of homes in Great Britain and the United States.
Now, at age 20 and following two successful seasons of "Robin Hood," she's carefully plotting how to present herself. She's eyeing a career beyond the series and guarding against being just another pretty face on the tube.
She doesn't like to stay out late or go to many parties. She says she doesn't have a steady beau, though she has "many male friends." Griffiths chooses to live south of London, away from the spotlight.
In many ways, Marian is much more social and aggressive than the woman who portrays her.
"It's quite tempting to go out to parties and have all that attention," she says. "I'm sure I would enjoy it for a couple of weeks. After that, it would drive me a bit nuts."
Marian, on the other hand, would have a different take. As the folklore suggests, she's a lady of privilege, rubbing elbows with the elite on many occasions. However, in this retelling of the "Robin Hood" legend, she's no damsel in distress.
Marian joins Robin Hood in his fight against the tyranny of the rich. She disguises herself, jumps on a horse and handles swords and bows with ease.
She's not about to sit around and be rescued.
"It makes sense for her," Griffiths says. "She's the only woman living in a man's world. It makes sense she has a tough outer layer."
Such an adventurous demeanor isn't something Griffiths was prepared for. Between the first and second seasons of "Robin Hood," she took riding lessons and learned how to look comfortable wielding weapons.
During the first season, a stunt double did her riding. "It was too dangerous to put me on a horse," she says.
Griffiths still doesn't do her own fighting. "The way the filming schedule works, we don't have a lot of time to do all our scenes," she says.
So, if close-ups are not required for scenes, doubles are often used, she says. "It saves time," Griffiths says.
Horseback riding intimidated her. "We never really had animals at home," says the city girl. "We only had two cats."
And like Marian, Griffiths doesn't use her status to get her way. "My father would kill me if I did that," she says with a laugh.
"That's not to say that someday I won't. It just means that is not the way I am doing it now."

she is so good
Lucy griffiths is such a good actress. There has been some speculation that she is signed up for series 3. although she died in a horrible way. I think it should have shown robin waking up on the day of his marriage to marian and it had all been a dream then it should ave a wedding scene. then it shows locksley manor on a summers day(some words at the bottom of the screen say 5 years later) with a little 5 year old boy shooting a arrow then robin comes and picks him up. then marian comes out holding a baby girl and much and eve and will and djaq come to a big feast in celebration of their robin and marians children (edward and kate). then djaq's son tom goes and plays with edwardand the scene closes like that.
Robin Hood Season 3
I agree. I hope that Lucy Griffiths does sign up for another season and that her death was just a horrible dream.
I heard that Lucy told FHM
I heard that Lucy told FHM that she had already signed on for a third season... I can only hope that she did! And that the King will bring her back to England with him when he returns!
Your Idea Of The Robin Dream.....
Hi, just wanna say that your idea about it being a dream is excatly what i thought of as soon as i saw the episode! I thought it was a really disappointing episode with the daeth it seemed really rushed. It seemed like a dream because one minute they were in England and the next they were in The Holy Land!Plus marian was wearing a white dress so surely when she got stabbed her dress should have had blood on it but it was still pearly white! I think that the only way to save the next series is to make it a dream. I do hope that she really has signed up for the third season. But the only thing i dont think would happen is about the little boy and the baby girl then it seems even MORE rushed! But that would be a definte thought about what could happen in an upcoming season or episode. By the way im only 11!
Im Alive!!!
Hello you tv lovers.
Just a quick mention that i am alive and well and going to come in the third series as a dream.
Thank You Fans
My telephone number.. 0800 Kiss my ass
Actually Marian coming back
Actually Marian coming back as a dream to either Robin or Guy would probably be likely.
Marion's Death
What was the significance of the big Ruby ring from the King? Did it have healing powers like Aragorn in Return of the King (Tolkein)? Much of the tale of Lady Marion is lore and fiction as is Robin Hood, but in all the books I read, she outlived Robin and lived out her life in a convent?
LG season 3
Yeah, this article i saw said she had signed p for another season but she and tiger aspect are keeping quiet about it.
I hope she does come back coz there's no Robin Hood without Marian is there.
Just saw the finale and am
Just saw the finale and am SO ANGRY. It has got to be a dream. The story of Robin Hood is as much about his love for Marion as his love for the people of England. If this is it...I will be quite dissapointed.
Marian's death
I do agree that Marian's death should be a dream, because i don't think it would be right to have the Robin Hood series continue without Marian. It doesn't seem right especially with the two finally getting married than she dies. If there is another season without Marian i think the shows may lose a little of their spice. Marian has a rightful place in that show next to Robin Hood:D!!!!!!
Marian's Death
After sitting STUNNED through the last episode, rushing to see what is on the net, I cam only say that if it is a dream, it is STUPID. The dream idea is so bad that I would just stop watching the series. I am very disappointed that she was killed (was kind of hoping Much was gone) but if that is how it is, that is just how it is. I hate it, but some stupid twist like a "dream" would just be bull!!
Maid Marian
Now that I've had a few hours to recover from the season 2 finale, I realize now why I gradually became addicted to BBC's Robin Hood. During the first season, the anachronistic dialogue ("I'm on it, Robin!") bothered me at first, then it became endearing as I got to know the characters. It took me a while to get used to Lucy Griffiths as Maid Marian, because she reminds me of Monica Lewinsky! I don't really care for all the swashbuckling, although the show would be nothing without it. For me, it was the love story that kept me coming back. Marian's death would have been a good way to end the series, but I do wish Robin and Marian could have had at least one steamy night together as man and wife. With Maid Marian gone, I might tune in to season 3 occasionally, mainly to see more of Keith Allen's brilliant performances. But I don't think I'll be very disappointed when I forget to watch.
Oooh.
I agree. If they kill Marian off for real, I may stop tuning in regularily...or period. I liked having a strong female as the love interest and kind of a side plot. It made the show more interesting. Even if it is real and she really did die, I'll be really upset. There are so many more ways they could have killed her that would have made the show better. Someone once suggested this and I thought that if she HAD to die it would have been a much better ending, it would have been better if the sherriff had killed her and then in season three Guy joined Robin to try and stop the sherriff.
please, no dream!
I am stunned too, but I agree, bringing Marian back via some kind of dream sequence would be ridiculous (too Dallas). They should just end the series now.
No Marian, No Show!
I will watch the first episode of the next season, and if Marian is really dead, I will no longer watch the show.
This was the worst ending I think I have ever seen!!
I was really looking forward to a nice Saturday night to watch the season finale only to get this. I have enjoyed the show, and while I have tired of each episode being a replay of Gisbon forgiving Marion (how can one guy be so gullable), I do think Marion is an important role and that without the role there is no show.
The last 15 minutes were as if they were written and portrayed by someone not even connected to the show. The script just fell apart, and the acting was horrible. I remember last season when she was dying but was brought back, the script was great and I actually teared up. The acting was believable. However, for this episode, Marion did not even look like she was in pain the majority of the last scene. And to just repeat the oath over again, were they needing to fill time or what. I just can't believe how they did this, I just can't even look forward to watching season 3, why bother. No Marion, and if season 3 is written by the same people that wrote the ending to this finale, well then who cares.
If the actress, Lucy, needed a break, there are SO MANY OTHER WAYS they could have written her character off in order to bring her back later or at least make it believable. How about just send her to the convent? Leave her with the king. Have her stay with the pigeon girl. Come on, be creative.
I hope they will somehow come up with a miracle and find a way to bring her character back and make up for such a horrible ending. I will keep my fingers crossed.
Marian will be back
I couldn't get to sleep last night after watching this last episode. I kept trying to imagine how they could continue this series without Marian. Would they have another woman come into Robin's life? Would they keep Robin woman-less? What? Then I thought, No, they can't continue the series without Marian. Marian's too much a part of the legend. They must be planning to end the series.
So now that I found out this morning that there will indeed be a season 3, I'm convinced they will find some way to bring Marian back. Without Marian there really isn't a Robin Hood. Actually, many believe that Marian represents the British Great Goddess, without whom no king can rule. So she can't die. She's a Goddess!
Personally, I was disappointed altogether with Season 2. And it had to do with two things, I think. First, there wasn't much about Robin and his gang helping the ordinary people. It was all about Robin's loyalty to the King. Second, Marian seemed less free, less active, more dragged down by forces beyond her control.
I hope that in Season 3 Marian creates a new way to strike blows for the poor. The Nightwatchman seems finished -- cover blown -- but Marian is smart enough to come up with some other way to help the poor. She needs to play a more active role than she did in season 2.
Horrible ending to Season 2
Completely devastated in the States. That is one way to kill a character and a show with one sword.
Maid Marian
Well, maybe she's only taking a shower...
maid marian
Dear viewers,
i am not happy to report this but right after the show,
i went online to check if marian was really dead or if it was a dream like u all did...and i found some sad news.
There will indeed be a season 3 but Lucy Griffithes will not be there. THE site on BBC america said that she was offered other deals in hollywood.
Im sorry to you all if you are now as disapointed as I am.
Maybe then Much can make his
Maybe then Much can make his move on Robin.
Lucy Griffiths and Marian
I was truly disappointed to see them kill of Marian. I unlike most of the rest of the American free world, had not read a spoiler and so was completely taken aback by that development. I really liked her in the role. Add to that, that they wrote out the other female role in the series, and what are we left with? I look forward to next season, but, not with as much fervor as I have enjoyed in the previous two.
THE site could by LYING!
Maybe those across the pond have a great publicity department and she lives! We are in a flurry and they are sitting there laughing at us gits who are chuffed about Marion.
Saving Robin Hood
I agree that without Marian the bottom will drop out of the show. I was so taken aback by this ending, it had a feeling of surrealness especially with the hurried trip to the holy land and the near death experience. Do you think the whole sequence that follows them being tied up in the desert is a hallucination?
I could see the next season showing Robin's life over the next few years being entirely dedicated to his work and relentlessly crusading for justice while keeping his heart empty. Showing how much less of a man he is without her, eventually that could lead to another girl falling into his life that reminds his of his long lost love(becoming the Marian to his sad broken hearted C. Brandon if we were talking in terms of Jane Austen characters- I think the analogy fits anyway).
I hope they figure out a way to save this show
Marian Returning (Again)...
would be an incredible copout. As much a I hated this ending, the fact is that they already had her die (from Guy's poisoned blade) and return (thanks to Djaq's healing prowess). Robin went through the grief, rage, relief cycle. They CAN'T do that again - it would be awful writing!
Woe are we
Let's face it. Any of us who have watched this show religiously over the past year or two have enjoyed escaping into another time and place once a week and have been looking forward to the romantic fantasy happy ending, with the "knowledge" that somehow, someday, Marian and Robin would end up together. They could have dragged us along for another couple of years if Marian were still alive. This is like a slap in the face, bringing us back into reality - Hollywood calls, so goodbye fantasy ending. Thanks a lot, Lucy and the BBC, it's just the thing I needed to remind me that this is just a TV show and I should be spending that hour each week doing something more productive.
I LOVE the Robin Hood series!! and i will continue to watch!!
i ABSOLUTELY love the series!!! I hated the ending at first, but then i realized that this is a great way to bring Marion back when Robin needs her advice or help with something. They can bring her back in a dream or as a ghost. I support the idea. What this scene also showed us is how much Robin and Marion loved each other, and that their love will never die.
-Allyson
ps-Congradulations on your success!! -to all the Robin Hood cast members and behind the scenes people.
Maid Marian is dead
Maybe she isn't dead. There was no blood. Robin didn't put her in the grave. You see the other guy is buried but not Marian. Why would Will and Djaq stay behind? Robin gives Will a nod and says, "Take care of her." Perhaps he meant Marion.
What do you think?
Robin Hood
I also love the series. It's really amazing story. בלוג סקס Robin the best!
The Ruby Ring
Actually the ring was to serve as a wedding ring.
