Everything you wanted to know about networking

I have been teaching "networking" for years. It is such a basic activity for getting anything accomplished virtually everyone does it, whether they realize it or not. So, what exactly is networking? According to Katharine Hansen, Ph.D., in her new book, A Foot In The Door, revised, "Networking is a lot like sales and marketing, and all three are about establishing and cultivating personal relationships." As she continues, "networking comes down to talking to people, making friends, building relationships - all with a little self-promotion and sales savvy thrown in."You all know that networking is incredibly important in the job search, particularly if you are a step or two above the "just out of school entry level", but chances are you networked your way through school. If you have any questions about what networking is, or how to get started doing it, check out Hansen's book, which includes: -A listing of networking Web sites, books, and organizations to help you get started. -Sample phone scripts and query letters. -100 informational interview questions. -Confidence-boosting help for the shy or intimidated job seeker. You name it, if it deals with networking, on any level, her book covers it, including help in networking in a very diverse work world. She gives attention to racial, gender, and age issues as well as former military personnel and individuals rebounding from downsizing. This is a book I wish I had written. It will help you. Before "Getting Hired" had the benefit of Internet exposure, I received a letter from Riga, Latvia, asking for information about job searching in America. I couldn't figure out how this person found me. My column only ran in our local newspaper at the time. The answer was a local construction company was doing a job in Latvia and used local master craftsmen on the job. One of those workmen shared his local newspaper with a Latvian co-worker, and networking happened, internationally! It's incredible. It works, Get networking, for your own good.Marvin Walberg is a job search coach. Contact him at mwalberg(at)bellsouth.net, marvinwalberg.blogspot.com, or PO Box 43056, Birmingham, AL 35243.
