Clooney: Comedy's not inherently easier to do than drama

Making a comedy isn't inherently easier than making a serious film like "Syriana" or "Good Night, and Good Luck," actor-director George Clooney says."There's this misconception that whatever the subject matter is means that that's sort of how the set is," says Clooney, for whom "Leatherheads" marks his third film as director, after "Good Night" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind." "We were doing (TV's) 'ER,' which was very serious stuff, and we did nothing but laugh the whole time we shot. It was fun. And it's the best way to do it. When you work 12 hours a day, you have to enjoy yourself."'Good Night, and Good Luck' was shot in 28 days on one set, and we shot eight-, nine-hour days. We had the time of our lives."This one took 65 days to shoot, and we were on 200 locations. There was a lot of work."So this was infinitely more difficult to make ... by a factor of 10 than 'Good Night, and Good Luck.' Lots of fun; we had great times still."And Clooney hopes viewers get the point of "Leatherheads":"This film is a cry for peace."(Contact Knoxville News Sentinel film critic Betsy Pickle at pickle(at)knews.com.)(Distributed by Scripps Howard News Service, http://www.scrippsnews.com)
