Dead baby left outside hospital

DENVER -- A baby girl in a basket was left outside Presbyterian St. Luke's hospital here Tuesday night. The infant was pronounced dead at the hospital. It was not known how old the baby was, or whether she was dead already when she was dropped off.Denver police received a call at 7:40 p.m. saying an infant had been left outside the hospital.According to detective. Sharon Hahn, someone had pressed the call button on a help box outside the hospital."A security guard came out, saw the basket, and took the baby back inside the hospital, where shortly afterward it was pronounced dead," she said.It was not known how old the baby was, or if someone was trying to take advantage of the Colorado abandoned baby law.Under that law, a parent can take an infant, within 72 hours of birth, to any firehouse or hospital, and hand off the baby to emergency personnel or a paramedic, with no questions asked. The death is being investigated as a homicide.(Contact Tillie Fong of the Rocky Mountain News at www.rockymountainnews.com.)
