ShareThisFormer Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee isn't likely to capture the Republican presidential nomination, but as a potential vice presidential nominee, his remarks merit scrutiny. Here are a couple that caught my attention recently: Speaking before the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., Huckabee mentioned a woman who had emailed him from Tennessee to report that her house had been destroyed by one of the dozens of tornadoes that struck the South on February 7. Amid the wreckage of her neighborhood, she said, her "Mike Huckabee for President" sign still stood in her front yard, untouched by this act of God.A sign? But how to read it?And how did Mike Huckabee read it? Tornadoes can do strange things. Sometimes they pierce hardwood trees with wheat straw.But during the same set of storms, a twister hit Castalian Springs, Tennessee, and plucked an 11-month-old boy from the wreckage of his home, wafted him 100 yards through the air, and then set him down gently enough in a field of debris that he escaped with only minor injuries. A miracle? Perhaps. On the other hand, his 24-year-old mother was killed, along with at least 58 other people across the South. God moves in mysterious ways, indeed. What does Huckbee think about his campaign sign, left standing amid the destruction? As far as I know, no one at CPAC asked him.Justifying the ways of God to man has been a challenge for theologians, philosophers, and preachers for millennia -- this special branch of theology is called theodicy. Huckabee has undoubtedly spent his fair share of time pondering why an all-powerful, all-loving God permits grief and suffering on his footstool.In fact, every thinking human who professes religious faith has had to somehow negotiate this difficult question. But we've already had at least one president -- George W. Bush -- who seems to believe that the anointing finger of God lies especially upon him, and we may want to be wary of another. However, I'm more interested in another remark Huckabee made during the same speech. Flaunting his tax-slashing credentials, he said that in Arkansas he created a "Tax Me More" fund. Citizens who opposed his bare-bones approach to government financing were challenged to deposit their own money in "Tax Me More" envelopes, printed and distributed by Huckabee, and donate it to the government at whatever high "tax rate" they pleased. Philosophy must have a word for this fallacy. It's common in the environmental debate.Many an ardent environmentalist has had his arguments deflated by accusations of some perceived failure to practice what he preaches. In fact, a version of this argument has been used against Al Gore.Essentially, it says, "If you believe global warming is such a big deal, you're welcome to stop driving a car and using electricity. In fact, you can retreat to a hut in the woods and live on grubs and berries." Although this argument is short on logic, it's often effective because it seems to support what people are already desperate to believe. In the case of the environment, it tells us that it's okay to ignore our energy-guzzling ways and whistle past the graveyard of global warming.In the case of taxes, everyone wants to believe that we already pay too much, in spite of our budget-wrecking deficits. But what really concerns me about this argument is that it has more than a dash of the arrogance and mean-spiritedness of the America-Love-It-or-Leave-It theme, a sentiment that has resurfaced during clashes over our war in Iraq.It's condescendingly dismissive of differing points of view and thoroughly cynical about actually solving problems that can have only a national -- or global -- remedy. Individuals will never solve our environmental problems by their private actions, any more than our massive deficit and debt will be resolved by the donations of a few generous citizens. The people who want to resolve national environmental and economic problems shouldn't be dismissed so casually. In fairness to Huckabee, he's far from being the only one who does this sort of thing. Still, a more serious and generous spirit, one that unites rather than divides the country, would be a refreshing change in the White House.(John M. Paying taxes unites us. It also divides us. People can pay five and even six times more in state and local taxes than other folks in similar circumstances making similar incomes.

I liked the article but I did want to let you know that the whole wheat straw piercing hardwood tries is a myth and was debunked on an episode of Mythbusters about a month ago. They shot wheat straw into a palm tree, which would be the easiest to pierce, at the exact speed of the fastest recorded wind speed of a tornado that we had.
Straw and Trees
Straw HAS been documented as being found embedded in hardwood trees. However, the mechanism of this implantation is often misunderstood. At high wind speeds, the very trunk of the tree is found to open up by small degrees. Picture a piece of rope compressed length-wise, so that while the rope itself is intact, there are small openings that appear. Such is the case with trees in a tornado. So the straw does not pierce the tree, per se, but instead is blown into a crack that then seals with the passing of the tornado. Cool huh?

I didn't like your article. I think you are being just a tad too intolerant toward Huckabee. His story at the end of his speech was not about theodicy. It was an illustration of the fact that he is still in the race, i.e, that he, like the sign with his name on it, is still standing. I'm surprised that you don't get that, since you are an English professor.
With regard to the current President Bush, I watched an interview of him several years ago in which he explicitly denied that God had chosen him for this particular stage of our nation's history.
Regarding the other part of your article, it's quite common for someone to tell others to practice what they preach and to be suspicious if someone's actions do not match that person's rhetoric. I don't see how this is mean-spirited or even counter-productive.

Huckabee has a history of corruption and lack of ethics and is one of two republican presidential candidates on the list of TOP TEN MOST CORRUPT POLITICIANS of 2007. One example, after being married for 30 years, Huckabee set up a WEDDING registry at Target for him and his wife to receive gifts for their house. The wedding registry was a way to avoid ethics laws prohibiting gifts to politicians.
Huckabee raised a son who stoned and hung a dog to death. David was fired as a Boy Scout's counselor for disobeying the "Be Kind" scout's creed . Daddy Huck hindered the police investigation of David for animal cruelty. This should bring pause to anyone thinking of voting for Huckabee. Mike Huckabee does not appear to have good judgment. He pressured the Arkansas Parole Board to free a convicted rapist, Wayne Dumond -- who then moved to Missouri and raped and killed two more women. Worse yet, he lies to this day about it, denying he had a role. Huckabee's former lawyer -- referred to reporters by Huckabee's own campaign, to support his story -- actually said that the governor called Dumond's sentence "outlandish" and "way out of line", and that Huckabee pushed for Dumond's release. Huckabee refuses to release the documents from his office concerning the case. A former aide has said that Huckabee's staff discussed how to make sure that documents about the case, especially the letters from other Dumond victims, could be kept secret. When he left the governor's office, Huckabee spent the entire governor's emergency budget - set aside for hurricanes, tornadoes and the like -- destroying the hard drives of 100 computers in the governor's office. www.realchange.org/huckabee.htm

Huckabee could never win in a general election. Imagine his Confederate flag flap being played over and over in the Dem's TV ads. And he wants to amend the Constitution to his religious agenda. This would alienate many moderates and independents. Americans don't want to be ruled by an extreme religious leader. Huckabee underperformed in every state that didn't have a strong base of evangelicals, even loosing to Ron Paul in five of those states.
Keep in mind Huckabee may be an ex-preacher but ACTIONS ALWAYS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS! Please do your homework if you're thinking of voting for this smooth talking snake oil salesman!

John, Huckabee would be like electing Jerry Fallwell to be president and you are worrying about an off the cuff remark about his campaign sign. You should know better! Either your rhetorical skills need sharpening or you had a headache when you wrote this one! Reread it. What in it would convince me to be wary much less even interested in what you had to say? You have a forum in which to comment on misguided religious right wing zealots like Huckabee and you want to address the theodicy question which is not even a question for him probably if he even knows what the word means. If Huckabee read this, he must have laughed. Try again please. Maybe do some real research this time.

At first, your article seemed informative and fair and then your unnecessary "fear" of religion turned me off. It is communist-controlled countries that fear religion, NOT democracies. So which do you want? Let the people choose whether or not they can handle a President of Faith for the 2nd time.

The problem with Google News and others spidering these editorial sites - it gets mistaken for an actual news article.
I believe everyone has their opinion, including the hoser who posted the same trashy lies about Huckabee. BTW, Huck has responded to the Target gift registry question, the pardon of the criminal, etc, so your 'facts' are simply misinformed opinions also. Either way, you've probably caused weak-willed people to believe you, since rarely does anyone research facts anymore.
Which brings me to the blind sheep of this nation - increasingly we have a lazy society who relies on TV ads (from competitors), liberal 'news' outlets, and editorial blogs (like this one) to make their decision on who should run their country.
It's frustrating to sit and watch you sheep, who know very little about a candidate, write on blogs with such fervor, either praising them or bashing them.
The Presidential Election is not American Idol - take the time to do your homework and don't vote blindly.
