Hi, Jewel,I have concerns about my period and would like to see a gynecologist. How do I tell my mom that I want to see a gynecologist without her going nuts, thinking I'm having sex? I'm not.-- CONCERNEDDear Concerned,Meeting with doctors regarding ailments is always an excellent idea. They've got the skills and training to help. Believe it or not, your mom wants to see your body in good working order, too.Right now, your mom is in the dark about the challenges you're facing with your period. If you want her support, you've got to give her the lowdown on what's going on. Speak to her not just as a parent, but as another woman.Reveal your health issues to her the next time you both have time to chat. Ask for her input. Explain why you have the desire to see a gynecologist. Request her help in acquiring such medical expertise -- even if that includes going to your family doctor for a referral. It may also help to openly state that you're not sexually active. In an effort to reassure her, you may invite your mother to attend the doctor's appointment with you. That way, she can be certain you're being truthful about the whole picture.Best of luck.-- Love, JewelDave,I am 23. No girlfriend.I feel miserable being single since I have never been in any relationship. Things are getting worse day by day, and I feel I am getting more and more lost and depressed. I am scared of socializing now. What can I do?-- MISERABLEDear MISERABLE.There's this misconception out there that being single makes you an ugly pariah who isn't worth anyone's love. Don't believe it.If you start getting depressed about having no girlfriend, realize there's no rush to be in a relationship. I think you're still young at 23, and have a lot of growing up to do.But since you're scared of socializing, your self-esteem is bruised -- hopefully, not irreparably. I suggest you grit your teeth and hit up some parties or pub nights with friends and get out there. You don't have be hunting for girls like some Casanova, but if you intend to have a good time with friends, your relaxed vibe could be attractive to girls.Don't try too hard. Be yourself. And don't overthink why or how you're single, because it will occupy your head too often. And since Internet dating has lost its stigma, why don't you go online and create a profile and see what happens? There are tons of free dating sites, and all it takes is some time and creativity (make your profile stand out from the rest). It can't hurt.Good luck!(Got a hot question for our cool columnists? Paying taxes unites us. It also divides us. People can pay five and even six times more in state and local taxes than other folks in similar circumstances making similar incomes.
