A ring bearer's a nice addition, but not a requirement

Q: Does the ring bearer actually hold the ring? What if I don't know any young children?A: A ring bearer can be a very sweet addition to a wedding processional, especially if you have a nephew or godson you're close to who could fill the role, but it's by no means necessary to have one. When there's no ring bearer, it's customary for the best man to hold the rings and slip them to the groom when the ring exchange rolls around. If you do choose to have a ring bearer, it's traditional for him to carry the rings down the aisle attached to a special pillow. However, some wedding planners advise that if your ring bearer is younger than 5 years old, you should give him fake rings to carry and have the best man hold onto the real ones. When ring bearers and flower girls are that young, they often get nervous and don't make it down the aisle! And if his role is strictly ceremonial, it won't be such a big deal if your ring bearer melts down and runs in the opposite direction.(Carley Roney, co-founder and editor in chief of The Knot, the nation's leading wedding resource, advises millions of brides on modern wedding etiquette at www.theknot.com.)(Distributed by Scripps Howard News Service, http://www.scrippsnews.com)
