Although the focus is mostly on women when it comes to swimwear, men have to have an eye on the right water-ready look as well.
This season there seems to be a shift from baggy styles to more-streamlined designs. The fashion editors at GQ magazine advise readers: "When you are on the beach with her, wear less this summer -- not those droopy, oversize surf shorts."
Unlike surf-flavored cuts, this year's trim, boxer-style trunks fit the body a little more and are shorter to show off the legwork guys have put in at the gym this past winter. We're talking an inseam of no more than about 6 inches.
The board short is still around in the expected longer length, but it too has been nipped a bit, giving it retro edge. The shorts are a throwback to the ones cool California dudes donned in those classic 1960s Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello beach movies. A decent body is required, but you don't have to break into a spontaneous dance routine at the bonfire.
Even more body-conscious is the square-cut suit. Thank the latest James Bond, Daniel Craig, for interest in this silhouette, which resembles trunk-style underwear. In the 2006 film "Casino Royale," the British heartthrob emerged from the ocean in tight blue trunks, which caused quite a buzz. Not for the faint of physique, they are more of a European favorite. In the States, you are more likely to see it at metropolitan locales, such as South Beach in Miami. If you want to try one on, try specialty swim shops. They usually sell a similar look by Speedo or Tyr.
For color, be on the lookout for brights, including green, orange and yellow, as well as subtle black and brown. White is good, too, making a tan look even darker.
Prints are musts. Bold florals really pop on the beach or poolside. Also out there are stripes, plaids and checks.
