Tears for "Too-Slim" Models?

ShareThis

So now the world is all atwitter over the plight of those poor, too-thin, fashion models. Major fashion shows in Europe have set a floor under "thinness" after one model tragically died from anorexia last year.

The question the world is apparently asking with baited breath is, will the New York fashion world follow suit when fashion week hits Manhattan in March?

The answer? Who cares? Yet these guidelines have already been issued by the fashion industry to those using the models next month:

schedule photo shoots during the day so the girls can get more sleep (surely, none of the girls would use this break to just party a little harder at night!)

and. . . keep an eye out for those who have anorexia.

Huh? Now we're thinking the fashion world carries medical degrees as a general rule?

Oh, and have better food back stage for them. Which they will ignore, by the way.

This is so silly. Models are tall and thin and young because clothes look best on tall, thin, young women. Big deal. The truth is hard.

Though what hapenned to the model suferring from anorexia is tragic, the fact is that barring the kind of malnutrition that leads to death, it is relatively difficult for an otherwise healthy adult to eat too little. In fact, many studies have shown that severely restricting caloric intake over time extends life! (No thanks says this writer, by the way.)

The problem we have in this country is an epidemic of obesity that is literally responsible for 300,000 deaths a year.

So, let's please not cry too many salty tears for the glamorous, young, beautiful, often well paid if too-slim girls in fashion week. Somehow, they and the world will continue to survive even if they are a bit on the thin side.
