The dreary season has arrived in many parts of the country, which means it's time to learn how to stay warm and dry under the drizzle. And we say if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! If you're in the market for a new jacket this fall, here's what to look for when you shop:
_ Make sure the jacket is waterproof as opposed to water resistant, or you'll get wet in anything heavier than a light shower. Also check that the jacket material is breathable to avoid that clammy feeling.
_ Covered or treated zippers, as well as zipper "garages" will help keep out moisture.
_ Try on the hood to ensure it fits properly (they're often too big, especially for women). You don't want your hood to fly off in the wind or if you're moving quickly (like skiing down a mountain) and make sure the hood doesn't limit peripheral vision.
_ Underarm vents are a great idea if you'll be wearing the jacket during more active outdoor sports. They help to cool you down when you're burning up the calories.
_ Inside pockets are an important feature if you're carrying anything like a cell phone or sunglasses that require extra protection.
_ Check the seams. Double stitching will help prevent tearing, while taped seams seal out water.
_ Consider the weight. Today's high tech fabrics mean you don't need a jacket to be heavy to keep you warm and dry. Layering your jacket with other items is preferable if you plan to be doing any activities. What matters most is that your outer layer keeps you dry.
_ Look for zippers with pull-tabs. They make it easier to grab hold and fasten and unfasten your jacket in bad weather, without taking your gloves off. Every little bit helps!
