A woman charged with fatally stabbing her husband told police that she left him dead on a staircase in their home overnight and for most of the next day, walking past his body several times before she called a friend to say he was unresponsive.

Michelle Coulson, 49, told police she stabbed her husband, John, 46, three or four times after he accused her of hiding his liquor.

The couple had just returned home after a long night of drinking at the American Legion in Clairton, Pa.

According to an affidavit supporting her arrest, both spouses reached for knives from a butcher's block in the kitchen. Mrs. Coulson grabbed a knife and Mr. Coulson snatched a knife or a pair of scissors, according to the affidavit.

Mr. Coulson told Mrs. Coulson not to stab him, but she slashed him in the arm, abdomen and scalp, police said. Mrs. Coulson suffered a puncture wound to her right side during the fight.

Mrs. Coulson then went into another room, slammed the door shut and went to bed.

She awoke the next morning to find her husband sprawled at the bottom of the staircase. Mrs. Coulson went about her daily business until around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, when she informed a friend that Mr. Coulson was not moving. The friend later called police.

She is charged with homicide.
