The premise of BBC America's delightful "Being Human" sounds like the setup to a joke -- a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost are roommates -- but the series turns out to be a soul-searching, contemplative exploration of what it means to be human and a funny take on more lighthearted aspects of supernatural life.
It premieres Saturday at 9 p.m. EDT.
George (Russell Tovey), who was recently bitten by a werewolf and now becomes one every month during the full moon, is the naive innocent among the roommates. (In "Grey's Anatomy" terms, he's the T.R. Knight character, also named George.)
Mitchell (Aidan Turner) is a vampire of the greasy, longhaired variety. He's much less skilled at controlling his human-chomping urges than, say, Angel in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" universe.
Annie (Lenora Crichlow) haunts the apartment where she died and where George and Mitchell now live as her roommates. In the rules of "Being Human," other supernatural creatures, such as vampires and werewolves, can see Annie. Their landlord, Owen (Greg Chillin), was Annie's fiance and she continually moons for him whenever he drops by.
"So what have we got to look forward to, us refugees, the flotsam and jetsam of death?" Annie says in Saturday's premiere. "Maybe if we still deserve such a thing as mercy, we find each other."
"Being Human" hits many of the same themes as other supernatural shows, particularly "True Blood," which also has a hierarchy in its vampire society. But this new import differentiates itself by looking at the mythic creatures from three distinct perspectives.
Each episode tends to put the focus more squarely on one of the three. Next week's episode explores more deeply how George became a werewolf. Episode three deals with why Annie is a ghost and hasn't crossed over to the proverbial "other side."
Even as "Being Human" deals with Big Issues of life and death and morality among supernatural creatures, the show isn't afraid to dabble in the mundane details of life and find humor in these characters' circumstances.
Mitchell: "I never know if it's Jewish guilt with you or werewolf guilt."
George: "It's pretty much the same thing."
Funny and thoughtful with surprising plot twists, "Being Human" offers an inviting mix for fans of supernatural stories.
