Trade question: The Edge for Thomas Jones?

ShareThis

Q: While looking over my league’s draft, I noticed that one owner’s top two running backs have the same bye week and his reserves are all backups, leaving him in a tough spot in week eight. He took Edgerrin James in the second round and I got Thomas Jones in the third, just five picks after the other owner. I was considering offering him Jones for James straight up, but do I need to sweeten the pot by also offering him an upgrade at another position?—Kevin

A: The two running backs had similar fantasy points last year and are closely ranked this season, but it’s obvious both of you prefer James to Jones, as Jones was still available when he picked James and now you’re eager to give up the Jets’ back to get the Cardinals’ back. So both of you view what you hope to get from him as more valuable than what you want to give him.

If you make the straight up offer, be prepared for a counteroffer or an outright rejection. While your offer is not far-fetched, most owners don’t worry about byes that are eight weeks away, at least not enough to trade their second-round pick to compensate. To make this trade happen, he’ll likely want something more than just Jones, and it’s likely that you would have to give up too much at another position for only a slight upgrade at running back.
