ShareThisSNYDER, Texas - There's an alien conspiracy afoot at the Snyder Police Department, at least on the NBC television show "The Event."
The town, or at least a fictional facsimile, has played a prominent role in the program's recent story line, with action aplenty at a Hollywood representation of the Snyder Police Department.
As it turns out, though, "The Event" has been sort of a nonevent in the Texas community -- at least until the show's depiction was recently brought to the attention of locals.
"I had no clue -- it's terrible to say, but nobody had informed me or told me or had any rumors about it whatsoever," said Melissa Elam, who heads Snyder's Chamber of Commerce.
Elam first heard about the town's role in "The Event's" twisty-pathed conspiracy drama from a former resident, now living in Lubbock, who called to clue her in to the town's prime-time portrayal.
But Elam, and others, welcomed the news, saying any publicity for the town was positive.
"We hope to be able to get a copy of the episode and use it in some of our marketing," Elam said.
The show, which airs Monday nights, follows Sean Walker, played by Jason Ritter, who -- while investigating his girlfriend's disappearance -- ends up unraveling an enormous cover-up.
The show, with a timeline that starts near the end of World War II, weaves multiple plot lines around mysterious entities -- some of whom live in secret among us -- that appear outwardly human but turn out to be of otherworldly origin.
The show's most recent action depicts a violent dust-up with some of the program's major characters at the Snyder Police Department.
A bemused Terry Luecke, Snyder's police chief, said he knew the show was called "'The Event,' or something," and that was about it.
"The ballgame was on last night and that was more important," he said Tuesday, adding that he might give the show a try as long as there was no conflict with any of his preferred on-screen action.
David Stewart, who grew up in Snyder, watches the show and was the one who made the call to Elam.
"I don't think many people would watch that show," he said of the program's apparent obscurity in his hometown.
Stewart, though, obliged that one "could say" he's a fan of the program.
"It didn't disparage the town," he said. "It was just a backdrop, a set."
Snyder celebrity Barry Tubb, best known for his role as Wolfman in the film "Top Gun" and as the director of "Grand Champion," filmed, in part, in Snyder, said that he'd be curious to know why the town was picked to be part of "The Event's" storyline.
But he's not surprised that Snyder is on the map, so to speak, for Hollywood types.
The town has been home to the likes of Tubb himself; Emmy Award-winning actor Powers Boothe; Dick Jones, star of "Buffalo Bill Jr." on NBC in 1955; Kevin Alejandro, who starred in "Ugly Betty" on ABC as Santos; and Charlene Holt, who starred in 1966's "El Dorado" as a love interest of Robert Mitchum and John Wayne.
"At one time, the head of talent at Warner Brothers, Wally Nicita, wanted to establish a pipeline of sorts with Jerry Worsham and Snyder to introduce the actors that were coming out of Snyder at such a rapid rate," Tubb wrote in an e-mail.
Worsham was a longtime, and well-known, high school drama teacher in Snyder.
"As for the alien aspect, I know a lot of those people, and some of them are in my family," Tubb said. "There have been so many abductions and re-entries here, we make Roswell look like a dirt strip."
