Size doesn't matter

China and the U.S. are expected to battle for the medal count here, and with good reason. With 1.3 billion and 300 million people, each country has a vast population to fuel their athletic programs.
But as they say in other quarters: size doesn't matter.
Look at India. It has the second largest population in the world with 1 billion people. But it has never been known as an athletic power. In fact, it has been a pauper.
Coming into these Olympics no Indian athlete had ever won an individual gold medal. In any sport. Ever.
But Abhinav Bindra ended his country's century-long dry spell Monday by capturing the gold in the 10-meter air rifle event.
So congratulations to India. Their long national nightmare is over.
