HOW TO BEGIN
You won't need much to start salsa dancing. Workout clothes are a good idea, as you'll probably sweat a lot, but they're not essential. Jeans will do.
Bringing a partner is not required. Most dance schools rotate students in a class to encourage learning with various body types.
Fancy shoes are not essential, but avoid flip-flops. After a few months, you'll likely learn to turn on the balls of your feet. At that point, suede- or leather-soled dance shoes ($50-$200) will be useful. A frugal alternative is to take a favorite pair of shoes to a cobbler and have them resoled with suede ($20-$40).
SCHOOLS
Along with the nationally franchised Arthur Murray (arthurmurray.com) and Fred Astaire (fredastaire.com) dance schools, many metro areas have a good selection of privately owned schools.
In addition to dance schools, many restaurants and clubs also host Latin nights. Some even offer free salsa classes. A good listing of venues can be found online at salsapower.com.
