Research by Robert Half International shows that employers value job seekers with strong people skills. In one of our most recent surveys, nearly one-third of chief financial officers said that, when evaluating two applicants with similar qualifications, an individual's interpersonal skills will tip the balance over other attributes.
As you craft your resume and cover letter, be sure to emphasize your ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with others. Consider this well-worded example from an office clerk:
"STRENGTHS: Superior communication, collaboration and listening skills. Possess a strong team orientation and have a reputation for excellent follow-through with colleagues and clients alike."
Well said!
In terms of attitude, this applicant appears to be the polar opposite:
COVER LETTER: "I just want to go to work and do my work and then leave. The less interaction, the better. I'm not interested in people. I won't be social on the job or off."
Is it safe to assume you're not coming to the holiday party?
Tact and diplomacy aren't the following candidate's strong suits either:
COVER LETTER: "You want a 'team player'? How about someone who is willing to say to the boss, 'No, your goals are unattainable!' and 'No, your way will not work!' and 'No, your idea is bad!' Is that 'team player' enough for you?"
To borrow your favorite word: no.
His next paragraph is even more negative.
COVER LETTER: "Companies say, 'Our employees are our biggest assets,' but that's hypocrisy! Hypocrisy!! Hypocrisy!!!"
We heard you the first time.
Finally, if you've been out of the work force for an extended period, highlight the transferable skills you've gained through other pursuits, such as volunteer work. This job seeker took a unique approach, focusing on her skills in managing a household:
"SKILLS: Can yell at kids and husbands who don't pick up after themselves, chase away door-to-door salesmen, and hang up on telemarketers."
