COVER LETTER: "I am a lover of big words that make me sound important."
We'll keep a dictionary nearby during the interview.
Instead of writing to impress, write to inform. Hiring managers value resumes and cover letters that are succinct and straightforward. Excessive wordiness and formality can come across as stilted, pretentious or forced. The following job candidates should have pruned the flowery prose and cut to the chase:
COVER LETTER: "In your forthcoming response I shall remain."
'I look forward to hearing from you' would also work.
"SUMMARY: The combination of my communicating skills and technological background has made for an efficient and knowledgeable individual who is technologically malleable, and coherent in statement."
Are you positive about that last part?
"OBJECTIVE: Herewith, I am seeking a position in which I can combine my past management and development skills in a strong human being-oriented environment."
She's a true people person.
"SKILLS: Writing/listening/eaking. Yes, I can engage in intellectual conversations with a myrad of professionals."
Speaking of "myriad" mistakes ...
Review your documents for spelling and grammatical errors, but also read for clarity. Every bullet point or sentence needs to be crystal clear; you don't want prospective employers struggling to decipher your message. This applicant's pronouncement left us perplexed:
"SKILLS: My positive attitude and presentable attire is my indispensable implementation."
Finally, be wary of using insider jargon. The person conducting the initial review of your resume might not be familiar with certain lingo or industry-specific acronyms.
RESUME: "If you believe terms such as JIT, DF and BPR can have a positive impact on your business, then I want to talk to you."
Let us guess: We should call you ASAP?
