Resumania: Be like Goldilocks when crafting resume

As you craft your resume and cover letter, think about the classic children's tale about Goldilocks and the three bears: Hiring managers respond best to resumes that contain just the right amount of information. Include too many details, especially those that do not relate directly to the open job, and a prospective employer will lose interest. Include too few, and the person reading your resume will not fully comprehend how you can benefit the firm. For example:

COVER LETTER: "I am new to the area and have no resume. I am, however, highly qualified for this position."

It'll take a few more details to convince us.

"SKILLS: I've worked with 30 to 40 software programs, but it's a bit much to list."

Can you give us the highlights?

Sometimes, it's difficult to determine what information belongs in your resume and what can be safely left out. After all, the temptation is to describe any qualification that might remotely tip the scales in your favor. Keep the focus tied tightly to the requirements of the position. Information about your personal hobbies, for instance, can be cut.

"HOBBIES: I love my Sunday football and baseball games."

But how do you feel about Monday morning meetings?

"SKILLS: I am a great cook! (I love chocolate also!)"

Can we put in a request for brownies?

"ABOUT ME: I have a personality that can fill a room."

As long as there's space in the office for getting your work done.

It's unnecessary to include "References Available Upon Request" on your resume because hiring managers assume you will provide this information if asked. These candidates should have removed other obvious statements:

"QUALIFICATIONS: You can count on me to be at work every day."

We assumed as much.

COVER LETTER: "I will not do anything illegal."

Thanks for clarifying that point.
