The "Population Exlosion" is a Big. . . Bomb
A few weeks ago I wrote in my weekly column that the once expected "Population Bomb," the title of a 1968 runaway bestseller by Paul Ehrlich, has actually become a population bust. More and more demographers and social scientists are pointing out that birthrates around the world, particularly in developed countries, are declining so rapidly it's dangerous.
In response, I received many angry e-mails and blog postings (betsysblog.com) expressing outrage that I would say such a strange thing.
Well, to borrow a phrase, "You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts." Lo and behold Russian leader Putin just said in his state of the Union Address that low Russian birthrates, in freefall for more than a decade, is the number one problem facing Russia today. . .
