LOS ANGELES - No matter what your job, accidents happen, even for actors on TV shows. Sometimes the perceived glamour of fame gives way to the reality that when you're on an action-adventure show, fake fighting can sometimes hurt.
Cote de Pablo, one of the stars of CBS's top-rated drama series "NCIS" (8 p.m. EDT Tuesday), has learned that in her role as tough Ziva David.
"Most of the bigger fight sequences I have, and I'm the girl," she said in a January interview. "I take that as such a compliment. This character is a tough, tough cookie."
De Pablo's no slouch, either. In a scene a couple of seasons back, Ziva had to deflect a rifle coming at her, pushing it away with her hand.
"Instead of pushing it to the side, I got a little jumbled up in the adrenaline and the fire of it all and I pushed the butt of the rifle up and into my mouth and popped my lip," she recalled. It was a real rifle so the impact caused her lip to swell and bleed. "This is the masochistic method actor in you: I stopped and said, 'I got hurt,' and after they cleaned me up, I looked at the director and said, 'Roll, baby, roll.' My adrenaline was going and I wanted to use that."
De Pablo joined the cast of "NCIS" in the show's third season after the departure of Sasha Alexander (now on TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles"). "NCIS" star Mark Harmon said the arrival of de Pablo and her character took other characters and relationships on the show "in a whole other direction.
"It certainly took DiNozzo in a different direction because of the way their relationship evolved," he said, speaking of Tony DiNozzo, the character played by Michael Weatherly. The sparks between Tony and Ziva have even led fans to coin the nickname "Tiva" for a romantic relationship between the pair that some fans hope will develop.
But playing that relationship is a delicate dance for the show's writers.
"We had a couple of big seasons of Tiva and we took it to a point that those who loved Tiva were screaming at us and those who had seen enough of Tiva were going, 'Oh, thank God,' " said "NCIS" executive producer Shane Brennan at a CBS party last month. In an episode that aired earlier this year, Tony and Ziva shared a hotel room and may or may not have taken their relationship to a new level of intimacy.
"We didn't give a definitive answer, but I'm sure people have an answer of their own. When this show finally runs its course, I'd love to be able to say to every fan that's ever watched that we will answer everything. I don't like to leave unanswered questions. I'm not saying we'll answer it this season because this show has a lot of years left in it."
The relationship among team leader Gibbs (Harmon), Ziva and Tony is very much like a father and two unruly children, and some of that paternal care carries over off-screen as well.
But that might change in the season ahead. Although most of the cast recently signed new deals, contracts for Harmon and de Pablo are up at the end of the 2010-11 TV season.
"It's a decision Mark will make," Brennan said last month. "It'll be eight years and that's a long time. Mark is one of, if not the finest television actor I've ever worked with. He loves what he does and it is a family up there, so I'm sure it will be a hard decision for him to make. He is very much the father figure in the same way Gibbs is the father figure of the group. Obviously, we hope he stays with the show, but that's a question I guess people at the studio and the network will (deal with) over the course of the season."
When the show returns for its eighth season on Sept. 21, May's cliffhanger -- Gibbs' father (Ralph Waite) was being held by a Mexican drug-cartel leader -- will be quickly resolved.
"What you'll see this season is we're going to dig back in to discover how the characters came to join NCIS," Brennan said. "We will be doing some origins episodes. I'm sure everyone would love to find out how Abby (Pauley Perrette) came to be, how DiNozzo came to be (on the team). I'm not saying it will necessarily be those (characters), but we will certainly be doing some of that."
In addition, actor Robert Wagner will return as DiNozzo's father.
"It's really exciting because here we are in season eight and we are confronting a show that is the No. 1 scripted drama," Brennan said, "and we are determined to maintain that."

Owen-TV: Talking with 'NCIS' stars Cote de Pablo, Mark Harmon
More TIVA is what I want!!!! Women like a little 'love' in their prime-time TV prgramming and more women than men watch NCIS! Are you listening Mr. Brennan? No more push & pull games. That's a cope out.
Oh, seriously, speak for
Oh, seriously, speak for yourself. *This* woman hated every second of the coy display that was the past two years' worth of Tony/Ziva. I can't wait for the show to go back to the good old days of the team operating as a unit, with equal time for all and personalities driving the B stories. I want to see Gibbs stop imitating Clint Eastwood, and smile again, and sign "I love you" to Abby the way he used to. I want to see Tony and Ziva grow up out of their teens, for heaven's sake. I want to see Ziva redeemed, because the terrific character of season three has been trashed beyond recognition. I want to see a whole lot more of Gibbs and Tony together, like they were at the end of Flesh and Blood. And I really, really don't want to see any romance! If I want that I'll watch Castle, where they do it right.
ncis
it does not matter what the writers do
this will still be the best show on tv.
it is perfect
I buy everything that has ncis on it,and I hope
Mark stays with it/ The scripts/directing/acting
and even the sets are great.
I have raised 5 children and they are all out of
the house, and now my husband can watch
another family being raised by a great idea of
an ex-marine, played by the great Mark Harmon.
SAMPER FI NCIS
I really could do without
I really could do without Robert Wagner but an Abby origin episode would be great. I find Tony was on a lot for the last year and a half and I think a slight rest would be best. More McGee and Ducky. If mark harmon leaves the show is dead anyway. I would never watch if Tony was made the head.
Yes Team! No to any more romance - ever!
I hope Shane Brennan's serious about getting back to the team. That's what this show's about, not about who's pining over whom in some ridiculous forced romance crap. If people want to see romance watch Lifetime.
Shows Direction
First let me say that I LOVE this show! The way ya'll have married this group.. each with their own little quirks.. BRILIANT!!
Now For Mark Harmon. I am in full agreement with some of the comments here. I have found through years of shows I have enjoyed, that as soon as you start killing off the leads.. you have essentially signed the death certificate of the show. I do hope Mark will resign for many years to come.. selfishly I admitt.. again I am a HUGE fan of this show!
Now for "Tiva" Bottom line is this. a little romance is a good thing. To much however and the show becomes "Days of our Lives"! Ladies.. the have WE and Lifetime even hallmark has a channel for romance. True fans of this show are here for antics and action!
Mr. Brennan: Keep up the good work!
Peace
NCIS season 8 "spoilers"
First thing's first... NO MORE TIVA. I am definitely one of those people who has had ENOUGH of that insipid, will-they-won't-they, who CARES, soap-opera dalliance (and it's nice to know Brennan and co. realize we're out here, watching.) It's insulting to assume that your audience requires some high school angsty "romance" in order to stay tuned, not to mention that all the TIVA has turned Tony into an accessory for Ziva. The show managed to take a great, complete, well-defined character and relegated him to cardboard cut-out status.
It's really difficult to imagine why Tony (who USED to be slick, irreverent, and SMART) would fall for someone who has repeatedly shown nothing but disrespect for him both as an agent and a man. And it's difficult to imagine how Ziva, who behaves NOTHING like a trained espionage agent and grown woman would, could actually participate in a relationship.
As for the character origins story lines, we NEED Abby and Tony's introductions. For some reason, it took SEVEN years to get to Tony's father, where we we knew more about Ziva in her first season, than we knew about Tony, Abby, and Gibbs combined.
I don't bother believing ANYTHING Brennan says anymore until I actually see it... therefore, I don't believe anything he says anymore as all his spoilers and teasers have proven to be false and fall flat.
I'll hold out for season 8, but not with much hope. Season 6 and 7 did a LOT of damage to the characters we fell in love with for those of us who have been following NCIS since it's two-part launch during season 8 of JAG.
Asshole.
Asshole.
Yes, more team! And more of
Yes, more team! And more of the old Tiva. The friendship and partnership. I would love a tad of romance but it would have to be done right. Otherwise leave it and I'll settle for a good meaningfull friendship. I've had enough of the push/pull.
Origin stories, will love those! And bringing back daddy DiNozzo will hopefully mean we get to see his mean streak. In my opinion daddy DiNozzo was portrayed to much of nice guy last season. Like his son, he wears a good mask, but his hide a lot more nastiness than we have been shown...
Hope also this show has a lot of years left! I love Tony and I think Michael Weatherly is a fantastic actor, but if Mark Harmon and his Gibbs leave it's over. But I think if at this point they would take any of them out of the mix the magic will be lost. But that's just me!
I loved what they did with
I loved what they did with DiNozzo,Sr. and am very glad they didn't demonize him. As for keeping all the characters, they could kill Ziva and there would probably be more cheering than tears. After what they did to her at the end of S6 she's irredeemable.
Sorry, but I do not agree with you
Sorry, but I do not agree with you! Mostly because I'm a huge TIVA fan, but in my opinion, the team would not survive that tragedy.
Killing Ziva..hmm..not a very good idea. At the end of season 2, Sasha Alexander left the show, they killed Kate. Ziva got Kate's desk, and she gets killed 5 years after Kate got killed? Cursed desk? And killing all the women agents getting on the show?
Kate - killed, Jenny (former agent) - killed.
Ziva - killed?
The NCIS writers would never kill Ziva. That'd be too much. I guess for season 8 the most important will be that how the team members ended up in Gibbs team, speaking of Tony or even Abby.
origins
I would love to see more of Tiva, and also lots of origins! I have a huge crush on Tony and want to see his dark secrets... heh heh heh! When is the season starting?
the future of the show
As much as I would love to see more "Tiva," I think what keeps many Tiva fans on the edge of their seats is waiting to see what will happen next with the characters. Developing Tiva too much would not be good because they couldn't take it much farther if they brought their feelings to the surface. The show would be boring if the characters' relationships did not develop more. It would just be like CSI and all those other forensic shows. The humor and characters' relationships is what keeps me watching the show, though I do love learning the few things about forensics and such that come up. I would love to see more of where the characters came from and how they ended up on the team, especially Abby.
I'd like them to find a great
I'd like them to find a great balance between character and case. We've had very light character/heavier case, in-between, and very heavy character/light case. I like learning about the characters, but too much and it becomes overwhelming, and not very good if the cases aren't written very well.
I am a Tiva fan, but I would like to see more of the friendship developed before they venture into any real romance.
First of all the executive
First of all the executive producer (Horowitz) said that they will pull Tony and Ziva closer and then they will pull them apart. As long as the show is on their will always be the teasing back and forth because that's one of the main reasons this show is successful. Glad to hear that they will go back to the team instead of Ziva being the lone wolf trying to become a citizen. Love the team episodes. Love when everybody gets a small part in the show and the last half of sesaon 7 was basically Gibbs in Mexico. I would love to see an origin of Abby but not crazy if they have a whole season worth. Sorry but I do like to watch some violence on the show and a little less drama. Also not a Robert Wagner fan. Glad to see Ziva's father is coming back too because that whole storyline was so successful. My favorite part of the show is the first 10 minutes where Ziva, Tony and McGee are barbing back and forth and then Gibbs arrives. I wondered what episdoe that Cote de pablo got hurt in.
I love Cote de Pablo and Mark
I love Cote de Pablo and Mark Harmon. Just like last year if any of the main characters leave the chemistry just won't be the same. It just wouldn't be the same. Mark Harmon is Daddy and Ziva has such a compelling back story. I thought maybe the show she was injured could have been Wargames. I would think an Abby origin ep would be interesting but agree too much gets a little overwhelming. It hasn't appeared in the seven years that any of the characters have appeared to mention any trauma that made them jump into NCIS and to be honest none are really very private people. I just hope the entire team stays together.
Bring Back the Team
I just was so disappointed in the second half of last year season 7. Too much men's obsessions, Gibbs infatuated with one of the worst characters ever on NCIS, couple of episodes with a DC madam with our male agents flirting. It just seemed so disjointed. The Mexican caper didn't have a buzz at all, I have to rewatch because I can't even remember how it ended. Bring back the team and lets' get back to the quirky crime drama. I wish they would get away from what happened 19 years ago and start dealing with the present. I didn't realize that this could be the final season of NCIS and that Mark Harmon and Cote de Pablo could ve leaving. I hope not.
Team Gibbs is the best
First, it's necessary to have at least Mark signing, because without him, no more NCIS. He's the glue and the best character on TV.
I couldn't care less about that insipid thing they call Tiva. My cat has more chemistry with dogs than Tony and Ziva have.
I can't say how much I am pleased that the new season is coming! :) Go the team !
NCIS Ziva Fan
Ziva is the most unique and fascinating character in TV.
She is the reason my friends & I watch NCIS. Without her, NCIS will be as boring as CSI, Law & Order,Bones, Mental List, House..... I never like to watch season 1 or 2 episodes b/c there is no Zeeevah.
HERE, HERE!!!! I agree 110%!!
HERE, HERE!!!! I agree 110%!! I hate watching season 1 & 2 and rarely ever do! I absolutely love the episodes after Ziva got there because well frankly Kate was too puritanical. Ugh!
They are the greatest.
I am not a Tiva fan and firmly believe that too much Tony and Ziva will change the dynamics of NCIS. Once you start something with any two characters you have to keep adding on more and more. NCIS is a crime procedual show, not some unfor filled love story. I would like to go back to the original episodes of crime, suspense and drama. I do sincerely hope that Mark and Cote stay on too. Mark said he wasn't the star of the show, but Mark mate, you are. Its true what Michael Weatherly said, you are the spine of the show...like it or not. NCIS just wouldn't be the same without you, and Tony is definately not ready to be team leader. He can be too imature at times and its time he was a little more serious, more often. Overall I just love NCIS and I hope it stays around for many years yet. My compliments to the writers.
Love Cotes and Mark
I love Cotes, as Sean Murray calls her per his interview on CBS, and the leader Mark Harmon. I would leave everything the same except for a few glitches at the end of the season. Bring back the team instead of everyone going off by themselves. That's why I loved the scene at the US citizenship and the Thanksgiving dinner.
Oh No Contracts again
Well that's horrible news. My two favorites could be the last season. Mark is the leader, the father of his dysfunctional family. If Mark leaves and they make the characters normal, then there is no NCIS. Ziva has the best background story of any character probably because they chose the Israeli background with terrorist family ties. Cote actually started me watching this show. Now we'll have to hear rumors all season long and not know if this will be the end. Harmon leaves it's over. Ziva leaves I won't have the same urgency to watch.
Tiva
Tiva is the reason I become addicted to NCIS since S6 finale arc Legend1,2, Semper Fi. Aliyah, TorC & Reunion.
If they can't re-sign Mark or Cote, they might as well end it in S8.
Nice Article on Cote and Mark
I really do hope that the show isn't on it's last season. Would definitly miss both Gibbs and Ziva characters. I hope this is not it's last year. The beginning of last year was my all time favorite. The second half got a bit away from the team but Brennan says that will change. That is a smart idea because their were a few non-NCIS type shows at the end. The origin episodes will be OK in small doses. I'm not sure that I need to know why someone became an agent years ago. I would think that an origin ep for either Abby or Ducky would be perfect and interesting. Both actors have really overdue in their characters storylines.
I'm not fussed on there being
I'm not fussed on there being a romance between Tony and Ziva myself. As most say it is the team dynamics that matter and make it.
Origins would be great, Abby and Ducky would be interesting and also since the show has went for so many years I don't see it hurting reminding us who they are. They had Palmer in it more last season and it was balanced enough; it could have went either way, but it was interesting without feeling like "who cares" when I watched it, so I think it would work more than what the people who wouldn't want it would think. People say they just want the action and crime with the team, but I believe that in the right dose it would make viewers care for the team even more, to understand them, makes you feel apart of the TV family as well I suppose and there will always be cromes in it. Ducky would be so interesting and it would help "tie up" in a way how they left it after his mother died. I think if the origins was spread out so that whole episodes weren't on one person each week people may be more satisfied. I think it is hard to guess the balance and despite people saying how they'd like it to go I think there is room to try things without annoying people that much.. Suppose I'm bias as I'd love to know more about Abby, Ducky and McGee. Gibbs, Tony and Ziva always will have attention and be focused on in some way so why not get to know the others who are also a part of the glue that is NCIS and who don't really get the credit for their part in it all working so well!?
So I guess my vote is more team, keep Ziva and Tony as a friendship being built and restored from past griefs and have the seriouus things they've been through together mean something, it dosn't have to make them fall in love why not just have a deep respect that they can't always show due to the antics of each character, that's intrigue/emotional enough for me when it comes to them anyway, it would be better kept light. I hope they have a lot more creative juices left in their writing choices for the next season/s.
Ofcourse we all hpoe Mark signs on again.
Keep going!!!
I love very much NCIS,and i have to say that it's the only spin-off show that has grow far more than the origin show from wich he was created and that is JAG.I love every character and without any of them it wouldn't be the same.Ziva basicaly to me is like a substitute for Kate so i have no problems with episodes of S 1 and 2,but earlier episodes carried out a bit more horror Stephen King like feeling. Now it's more action and shooting with some espionage.Without Mark it's over,he is the icon and the leader of everything.I loved the last few episodes where he comes like a John Wayne cowboy in Mexico. He needs to sign if they want to keep this NCIS feeling, and Ziva also. She is bit more capable character then Kate and more funnier because everything is strange to her. So,more team, bit of origin episodes and i would love the see some of the movie stars as guest stars in episodes, and more crime solving single episodes and less arc stories that goes through half of a season.Keep going for another 4 years at least!!!
Mark Harmon
Mark Harmon is NCIS. There is no show without him!
you dont understand
the people who dont want tiva to happen any more do not under stand what would happen if tony and ziva did not flirt or start to date. in seson 6 tony and ziva did not even have a chance to happen becuase ziva and her stupid boyfriend. when tony and ziva are not flirting or secretly crushing they are fighting and you do not want that to ruin their relationship.season 6 ziva quit ncis and she almost died because tony and her were arguing the last 4 episodes id rather see them makeout than argue.
Meh
Given how pathetic the last two seasons have been in comparison to the show from s1 to s5, I actually DO hope this is the last season. They've already ruined most of the characters since six began - Tony is an utter joke except when dramatically appropriate for him to be competent, Ziva has turned into Mossad Barbie, the whole Tiva thing has become tired and insipid (and this is coming from someone who USED to ship for them until Brennan utterly ruined the pairing with that dross in season 6), McGee is more often than not an utter jackass, and Gibbs just isn't interesting anymore. Viewed objectively, pretty much all of season 7 utterly sucked, especially when you compare to previous, SUPERIOR seasons where the characters were actually in-character, the crimes didn't seem to be afterthoughts, and the banter between the team was actually unforced.
So if Harmon has ANY brains, he'll walk away after this season and let NCIS go before it becomes even more of a hollow shell of its former quality.
