Owen-TV: New shows worth checking out include 'Better With You'

There may not be a "Modern Family"-style critical hit in this fall's batch of new broadcast-network series. But there are some new shows worth checking out. Two comedies and three dramas top our best-new-series list.

These are qualified recommendations based only on viewing the pilot episodes of each program; plenty of series rise and fall after the pilot.

Among the shows on the "worst" list, I had the highest hopes for "No Ordinary Family," and it could still redeem itself after a plodding pilot.

That's the great thing about television: Each week brings a new episode and a new opportunity for improvement.

BEST

"Better With You" (ABC)

"The Defenders" (CBS)

"The Event" (NBC)

"Lone Star" (Fox)

"Mike and Molly" (CBS)

"No Ordinary Family" (ABC)
