ShareThisThis week, the Red River Rivalry will introduce a new era in quarterbacking.
Oklahoma-Texas will go from the most veteran -- and most prolific -- QB rivalry in the history of the series to a pair of sophomores who will be making their first starts at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
Gone to the NFL are Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy, who combined to make seven starts in the rivalry, the most of any Sooners-Longhorns quarterbacking twosome.
Instead, Oklahoma's Landry Jones and Texas' Garrett Gilbert will become the 14th matchup of first-time starters in the rivalry since 1970, and the first since Paul Thompson/McCoy in 2006.
McCoy got the best of Thompson that year, leading Texas to a 28-10 victory, part of a 4-1 run for the Longhorns in this game. Since 1970, the Longhorns have a slight edge when both teams have first-time starters at quarterback, with a record of 7-5-1.
But with Jones at the helm, the Sooners appear to have the advantage going into this one.
Jones didn't start in last year's Red River Rivalry, but he did enter the game in the first quarter after Bradford re-injured his shoulder. He didn't play well, but the fact he played gives Jones a leg up on experience over Gilbert.
Jones has also been playing better than Gilbert so far this season.
Through the non-conference portion of the schedule, Jones has thrown for nine touchdowns and ranks No. 47 in the country in passing efficiency.
Gilbert, who struggled in Texas' stunning loss to UCLA on Saturday, has passed for just four touchdowns, has thrown four picks and ranks No. 81 in passing efficiency. The four interceptions equal the number Gilbert threw in limited time backing up McCoy last year.
