ShareThisAfter being offered a role in the new "Halloween II," Margot Kidder turned to the Internet to see what director Rob Zombie was all about.
"All the kids in town said, 'You haven't heard of Rob Zombie? He's cool.' I Googled him," she says. "My first thought was, 'Oh my! His music sure is loud.' "
At age 60, Kidder took the role because she says actresses her age rarely get chances to be in today's horror movies. "Way back when, before the 'Superman' movies, I was a 'scream queen,' " she says, referring to young actresses who were often cast in '70s horror roles.
Thirty years ago, Kidder appeared in such titles as "Black Christmas," "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" and "The Amityville Horror." She is best known for her role as Lois Lane in the "Superman" movies with Christopher Reeve.
In "Halloween II," in theaters Friday, she plays Barbara Collier, who befriends a troubled Laurie Strode, the movie's lead victim.
And despite her personal rule to try and do movies with positive messages, Kidder agreed to do "Halloween II" anyway. From her perspective, today's horror movies are more comical than scary.
"They are meant to be funny. Most people who make them have a sense of humor," she says. "I don't think you take the violence in those seriously."
Kidder admits she was taken aback by what she had read of Zombie's image. Once she met the tattoo-laden, pierced musician-turned-director on the movie set, her opinion of him changed dramatically.
"I was so knocked out by him," she says. "He is so sweet and angelic. He's such a good director. I told him, 'You're fooling your fans. You aren't what they think.' "
Kidder could say the same for herself. After a well-documented nervous breakdown in the 1990s, she retreated to a small town in Montana, regrouped and then started acting again.
She's a periodic guest on prime-time television shows (such as the CW's "Smallville") and has supporting roles in movies. Kidder may have been down, but she's definitely not out.
"I've been acting now for 35 years," she says. "I cannot believe it. I have been very, very fortunate and very, very blessed."
