After a fairly tame run lately, this year's race for the Heisman Trophy could be a wild one.
That's certainly true if the first Scripps Howard Heisman Poll is any indicator. This first poll saw no less than six different players garner first-place votes with Stanford QB Andrew Luck atop the jumbled pile.
Luck, a distant second to Auburn's Cam Newton in last year's final Heisman vote, garnered four of 10 first-place votes. In the Cardinal's 3-0 start, Luck has thrown for 786 yards, eight touchdowns, one interception with a touchdown run.
A surprise second is Baylor QB Robert Griffin III who leads the nation passing efficiency. After finishing fourth in last year's Heisman, Boise State QB Kellen Moore is third followed by Oklahoma QB Landry Jones and South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore.
Since its inception in 1987, the Scripps Poll (the longest running Heisman poll in the nation) has correctly picked the Heisman winner in its final poll 20 of 24 years, including Newton last year. Ten voters select five players each week. The tabulations are made on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis, with five points for a first-place vote, four points for second, etc. First-place votes are in parentheses.
