Hobbies: For photos, it's best to think inside the box

Do you know anyone who doesn't have a camera? Everyone I know takes photos at big events like graduation, at yearly celebrations like Father's Day and during everyday activities like soccer matches and dance class.

Trouble is, with so many photos accumulating in shoeboxes, on memory sticks and in computers, it's difficult to know how to begin to organize them. One solution is to pick a handful of your favorite photos and create a smaller project that features just those photos.

With graduations in progress, and Father's Day just around the corner, now is the perfect time to create a gift box that will hold a present, and feature a few favorite photos.

With a little clever construction, your gift box can become a mini-scrapbook after the gift has been taken out.

Begin with the box lid. You can make one, or use the top of a store-bought container. Measure the sides of the lid, and use the dimensions, and cut two long strips from heavyweight card stock. The width of the strips must match the inside dimensions of the lid.

The length of the strips must accommodate the size of the gift that will sit inside. The middle section of each strip should match the dimensions of the lid. Once the two strips are cut, simply overlap them, fastening them together in the middle, and add photos to the ends. Fold up the ends of each strip and decorate the center of the crisscrossing strips with your personal greeting for the recipient.

When the strip ends are folded up and the lid is placed over the top, a temporary box is created. The inside of the box is decorated with photos and the outside is embellished with craft supplies to look like a gift.

A photo box is the perfect place to nestle a tie for Dad, or a check for a graduate. And once the gift is removed, the box becomes a fabulous photo display that looks great sitting on a table. Each time the lid is lifted, the box sides will drop, revealing four fabulous photos. Is it a gift box or a photo display? It's both!
