Hobbies: Felt flowers add style to a room

I'm always on the lookout for really special fabric flowers that have a vintage feel. Carefully arranged, they can become a one-of-a-kind centerpiece that is always in season. My Sizzix die-cutter is perfect for this project, and it's a staple in my crafts room. It is a small crank-powered machine made by Ellison. Choose a shape, and then quickly and easily cut through a variety of materials such as paper, rubber, felt, fabric, foam or sheet magnet. For this bouquet, I used flower-shaped dies in the machine, but you can also create the flowers by cutting the felt with regular scissors.

Gather:

Sizzix machine

Floral dies in various sizes

Felt in various colors

Buttons of various sizes

Chenille pipe cleaners

Vase

Fabric glue

Needle

Thread

Scissors

Create:

Gather felt in many coordinating colors. Follow the instructions on your Sizzix machine to quickly die-cut flowers of all different shapes and sizes in minutes -- or cut out felt flowers by hand with scissors.

Layer three or four sizes and colors of felt flowers with fabric glue.

Attach a small button on top of a large button with the needle and thread. (I used combinations of cool vintage buttons.)

While the thread is still attached to the buttons, sew through the layered flowers. To add a stem, secure the flower to a chenille pipe cleaner.

Make enough flowers to fill a small vase, and cut the pipe-cleaner stems to the desired length.

This project is very versatile. By leaving out the pipe cleaners, you can create lovely flowers that can become pins, hairclips, headbands, jewelry and more. For more information on the Sizzix machine, visit www.sizzix.com.
