The creative possibility that lies within a single branch is inspiring. It can be manipulated and transformed into some of the most beautiful, organic jewelry pieces. Working with branches doesn't cost anything, which makes people even more fearless with their efforts, because they're not as concerned with making costly mistakes. If things don't go as planned, you simply head outside, cut a few more branches and try again. The tools you need are minimal, so it makes for a great project that anyone can tackle.
The Branches:
Collect branches from different species of trees for different looks. The textures of the bark and the coloring will vary, and that will give you a charming assortment to work with. Select dry, solid branches in several diameters. Use a pair of anvil pruners to cut to size. Anvil pruners work best because they will give you a clean cut without flattening the branch.
The Beads:
There are a multitude of options when it comes to the style of "beads" you create out of your branch.
-- Cut to shorter lengths and drill through the center using a 1/16-inch drill bit. The placement of your holes will determine how the bead will hang.
-- Sharpen one end to a point using a pencil sharpener, and then cut to shorter lengths, leaving one end flat. Drill through the flat end using a 1/16-inch drill.
-- Cut into small disk shapes.
-- Connect several thinner ones together by wrapping with thin wire or natural twine.
-- Sand the ends to round over for a different look.
-- Paint with acrylic paints to add color.
-- Stain with wood stains for more earthy colors.
-- Finish off with a paste wax and buff for a nice, polished look.
-- Shellac is another natural finish.
Natural Additions:
Combine your branch beads with nest-like wire beads you create yourself using 20- to 24-gauge wire. Cut a 10-inch piece of wire and then twist, turn and wrap to create a freeform-shape bead. Curl the ends and tuck inside.
The Perfect Perch Pendant:
Purchase a set of miniature birds that are intended for small-scale dollhouses. Drill through the center of the bird using a 1/16-inch drill bit. Select an interesting branch with a small offshoot and cut to around 2-1/2 to 3 inches long. Decide placement of your bird and drill a hole through your branch using the 1/16-inch drill bit. Secure with a decorative pin. Drill larger holes on each end, and use leather cording to hang. Add one of your nest-like wire beads underneath the bird for added charm.
Refer to any jewelry book, fashion magazine or catalog for inspiration on your designs. Experiment with different configurations and connections to create one-of-a-kind organic pieces. The more you play, the more you'll feel like branching out. Wear what you create proudly, my friends!
