For those of you who read this column regularly, I apologize for repeating some thoughts over and over again, but that's how many people learn.
Understand that, yes, our economy is experiencing problems, but also understand that bad news sells and that's why the news media is spreading the gloom and doom so thickly. Instead of saying something like, "Economy Shows Signs of Healing," a headline will more likely say, "Closings and Downsizing Continues as Stock Market Has a Better Day"!
Bad news sells.
If you are working, the unemployment rate is 0 percent! If you are unemployed, the rate is 100 percent. That's all you need to know about the unemployment rate in your area. Don't be affected negatively by those things you cannot control.
Yes, companies are closing and others are downsizing, while still others announce hiring freezes. There is no question that our economy is suffering, but millions of unemployed workers are finding jobs every day.
Fact: Show me any employer who has to downsize and I'll show you an employer who will hire the right person for the right job -- someone who can help that employer be profitable right now.
Fact: Show me any employer who is announcing a hiring freeze and I'll show you a hiring freeze that can thaw and melt for the right person for the right job -- someone who can help that employer be profitable right now.
As I said, millions of unemployed workers are finding jobs every day. How? They are getting hired by matching their skills, abilities, experiences and knowledge to the needs of employers who need them to be profitable right now. They aren't just posting resumes and responding to advertised job openings. They are using the Internet to research jobs, industries and specific companies to learn about cultures, goals and possible needs -- and, they are getting names of company officials that need to meet them. They are also networking with everyone they know and everyone they meet and they are making networking opportunities happen by being visible and involved in their communities.
The workers who are finding success in this weak economy believe in themselves and focus on what they can do for their next employer right now.
They are controlling their destinies by staying positive and focusing on what they can control, and you can too.
